I'm getting a dream-like feeling from this. Its how Fluttershy falls, I get this feeling as if she is sinking through a pool of water. Rainbow Dash breaks through the clouds engulfing Fluttershy from her gloomy atmosphere that feels unreal to Fluttershy's rather peaceful expression. Though I'd expect more emotion from Rainbow Dash showing that she is concerned in a more "sad" way; she's Rainbow Dash and she's not going to starting bawling until it's over and done. You matched her character well, but it still feels a bit odd to the emotion you are trying to convey. While Dash comesin from the side, I get the feeling that she was lucky enough to be there to catch her. If you want to put extremes to extremes, if you had RD come straight down above her with more of a saddening look it would have felt shehad seen the whole accident occur before her very eyes and was the only one to save her.
Still, this is very impressive, especially how you made Fluttershy in a dull color to reflect her background and giving her the sense of complete free fall. Dash has he need for speed pumping right in her and you drew that well. I love how the wings are laid back while the mane swept back into her face. Just one little thing that got me off was the different sizes betweens Rainbow's hoof and Fluttershy's hoof. Other than that, this is phenomanal!

Well, the thought on this was something about Flutters just giving up and letting go.
As for RD, I think of her as just focusing on catching her. As you said, bawling can wait for when it's over. You're probably right about making her race vertically rather than from the side, it'd have a stronger metaphorical interpretation that way.
Then again, you could interpret the darkness as being the only metaphorical thing in here.

just to let you know that i dont have frends and im biegn bullied by my own mother,big brother and even little brother! and my father is never proud of me. so if anyone can read this i need help i cant keep living like this! it isint long before i get crazy and start haging myself inside the closet i know that its wrong but soo i wont know. i wont know anything im gonna go crazy! if anyone has a heart and can be my rainbowdash please be her for me!

I'm still affected by the "Happier days" drug, so my comment may be a little weird.
Very nice scene! The contrast between the gloomy skies and the clear skies symbolising a hope is well visible and looks great. The poses are also well done. You should have also added some rain to add some drama.
Just as there is a nice music in a comment which includes a rain.
