That sucks massively!!
I once had a camera i was taking pictures with in a public area.

All of the sudden a guy came creeping up behind me and stole my camera. The bastard lost grip of it as he was running and dropped it like 3 meters in front of me...

He broke the damn thing and managed to get away.. (asshole)

Wow! I think your story it more worse than mine

I had a reflex camera, i think you know what it's. And i was getting to Miami, stopping 2 hours at the New-York airport. And it get stolen there, i didn't even saw it immdiatly. The pickpocket was good, damn. Now i have to work to get a new one...
