26. Fate

Was it really just a coincidence that he'd picked right? Doug Rattmann didn't think so. His 'feeling' to place Chell at the top of the list hadn't been wrong.

When he'd found out she'd awakened, he watched silently from different dens, glad that GLaDOS was distracted with Chell. It must have been fate that Chell would be the one to take down the A.I.

Maybe it was also fate that he'd save her after she was dragged back by the Party Escort bot and placed in the relaxation center, hooking her up to the power supply.

It must have also been fate that he would be stuck in such a weak state, losing blood with his companion  cube there to be of help in the end.

And it was up to fate to decide if he bled to death or lived.

27. Freedom Isn't Free

She was free to go about however she wanted with tests, but was trapped inside of a cage called the Enrichment Center.

He was free to roam around and hide, keep running, but he was stuck in the same cage like a rat running tests.

In the limited freedom the two lab rats, who didn't see each other, enjoyed in the Enrichment Center, they knew that real freedom was outside with the sun; other humans and no tests.

But even out there, freedom wasn't all it was cracked up to be, 99999- later…

28. Wildflowers

Chell felt a sense of familiarity as she eyed the small little flowers growing from the ground. Gently, she plucked one, brining it to eye level and looking over the smooth petals. It had been a long time since she'd seen real flowers.

"Oh! What you've got there is-"  Wheatley was cut off by Chell, who nodded.  "A flower."

The personality core started to ramble about what he'd heard about flowers, including how they attracted bees and weren't the best gift for Valentine's Day.

"…" Chell laughed, before placing the flower in her tangled hair and asking him how it looked.

"… Beautiful…"

Wheatley wasn't referring to the flower though.

29. Energy

Chell hadn't realized how much the adrenaline-- that GLaDOS had been apparently pumping into her air-- had helped her with her feats in the Enrichment Center, until a couple of miles of dragging the Companion Cube with her through the endless field had taken it's toll on her. She sat down, laying against it for support.

Back at Aperture, Chell had had so much energy to do what she wanted and to last for so long on those tests. But now, her muscles ached and protested, and there wasn't even a ASHPD to help her out.

A small noise erupted from her stomach, reminding Chell that energy came from food and energy meant more distance she could go.

"…" She eyed the wheat, wondering how edible it was.

It couldn't be as bad as those gels… She plucked a piece, chewing on it.

It was a start.

30. Notes

Chell couldn't help but keep in mind everything she read from what she assumed was the test subject GLaDOS had observed before her. In her mind, she kept mental notes:

The cake was a lie.

The previous test subject was obsessed with companion cubes.

They seemed to have a thing for that one song she'd heard on one of the radios in this center.

He or she was insane.

And they had been watching her for a while, judging by the pictures of herself they'd left behind.

"Exile
It takes your mind again
Exile
It takes your mind again."

Who are you?, she wondered as she stumbled upon another den.

"You've got suckers' luck
Have you given up?"

The sound of music had drawn her in,leaving her disappointed when she found this den had been abandoned too, leaving only the madman's drawings, empty jugs and cans, and the radio.

"Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?"

It does trouble my mind. Chell picked up the radio, taking it with her as she left to continue the test.
