It seriously isn't. I can't even begin to tell you how many times you will see someone like, "This is my OC her name is Emma and she's African American and - " "WHOA HOLD ON UR BEENG SOOOOOOOO RACIST FAG!"Just because someone makes an OC or FC who is any race but white, they aren't being racist. Heck, even if this character is a GOOD GUY and isn't white, it's somehow considered racist. Is the person saying "F*** this race!"? No, they aren't. Heck, sometimes the people calling something racist ARE BEING RACIST.
I saw a Gorillaz video and Russel, the Black one from New York, was storming down a pier where these two scrawny white guys were fishing. He looked angry, but he ignored them completely and jumped into the ocean. (Don't worry, it's not a suicide. He was just jumping off a pier that had to have been three feet at the very highest above the ocean. And it was for the album "Plastic Beach" I believe.) I looked at the top rated comment. It was a reply to another comment. Here's what it was like (first comment, then the reply)
Username X: Isn't it racist how this big black guy is scaring these two white guys?
Username Y: It's racist how you actually took note of that and translated it as that.
Again, I'm not using exact wording. I don't fully remember.
So long-story short, just because a character isn't white doesn't necessarily mean that the creator is racist. If they keep cracking jokes about it and only use the character to humiliate and defame the entire race, then it's racist. If it just represents a single character, then it's not.
If you can't read it, it says:
Just because a character is . . .
Black
Italian
Asian
German
French
Mexican
Any race except for white
It doesn't mean I'm being racist.

Well, it comes to the other side too. If all your characters are white, the people call you racist too...
Come on! Let the people have OC's that they want to have! White, black! Noone cares what you think! If they bother you, create your own OC's...
(not you, author, it's generally to the haters)
PS:...Germans and Italians are white...sooo...

In an original fiction I'm writing, one of the main characters is half-Chilean. Another is of Romani Β and West Indian descent (seeing that I have Romani and West Indian ancestors in my family tree) and two of the main protagonists have Guyanese and Cornish ancestry. I try to have variety in my characters depending on the setting. In real life, people aren't truly angels or demons. They're flawed, just like many fictional characters.

I've actuallyΒ only seen the exact opposite. Some think if your OC's are only white, then that's racist. What I can imagine if someone calls your non-white OC, racist, is if the OC looks white with just a darker skin tone. For example, when the first black Barbie came out, she looked exactly like Barbie, but with darker skin. People thought that was racist. So then, they made the black Barbie doll with more facial features that would identify her as black. What someone else might think is racist, for example, is if your OC is supposed to be German, so you make him/her look like the stereotypicalΒ German. So bottom line, if your X race/nationality and your OC is supposed to be Y race/nationality, do some research of that race/nationality. Don't mock or exaggerate your OC so much, or people might think your racist.Β
Those people you're talking about tend to be just ass kissers rather than concerned people.

I ran into a racist fangirl, once. My Creepypasta oc (The Shadow in the mirror) was Egyptian (somewhat african) and her hair was straight with a dark shade of brown and her skin was dark, too. Her clothes were torn and she was all covered in blood. a person commented "your oc is so ugly! Black girls don't have straight hair! They have afros! Also, black girls arent that pretty! Make her white!" I was like, "seriously????"

Probably because they're animals and it's language. For some reason people get really on edge when it's human skin color. Whether they're good, bad, or somewhere in between, having a human character of any race other than white or any ethnicity other than American (or wherever it is you live in the world) gets everyone labeled racist.

Β I have also people claim that i'm racist if I insult a character who is "of an ethnicity" saying only dislike them because they aren't white. Simarly(and much more often) with people's fannon homosectual paring, aperantly i'm homophobic if i dare insult it even if the cannon character's are obviously straight I think people forget that racism Β sexism and classism sexism both ways and just because it is directed in the opposite way than it us is( "Minorities" towards whites, women towards Β men, poor or middle class Β towards wealthy) doesn't make it any less racist.Β

That's really a good change of pace. Most of the people I hear about having characters like that are bashed with "OMG RACISM!!!!" for no reason. It's good hearing about a success story, and something is telling me that you have very well-written characters if you get positive feedback on them.

It's just saying how not having a white, normally American character in a story, comic, etc. is not racist. There are seriously people who will freak out over a bad guy being Black, like, "OH MY GOD YOU'RE SUCHΒ A RACIST!" Even if the character is white but not like Atheist or something: "OMFG RACISM!" If you have 99 White, American bad guys but one who's German or something like that, "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST!" I'm trying to say that it's NOT racist if not all of your characters are White, American, White American, etc. (Next I'll have to make a stamp explaining how havingΒ a Japanese character doesn't make the creator a weeaboo.)
Β
Does that clarify everything?

DaBair In reply to JamesE82 [2014-03-09 14:04:51 +0000 UTC]
I have occasional minority villains. Griselda, one of my villains for my Pokemon X and Y fanfic, is a Sephardic Jew (her real name is Soraya Sarfati - Sarfati is a Sephardic surname) - a few other characters who are good guys also have Sephardic surnames. Her religion is never brought up. She doesn't even look stereotypically Jewish - she's got straight purple hair and eyes (remember, this is Pokemon, so weird hair colors are everywhere). The main antagonist of one of my planned novels is a Turkish woman who looks Syrian. The hero is Turkish too, but he looks more European. The villain is from a city near the Syrian border, while the hero is from the western part of Turkey, so it's kind of justified. The villain isn't stereotypical, either - she's very domineering (a stereotypical Turkish woman would be one who is submissive to her male relatives - this villain has actually killed several male relatives without getting in trouble!). Both the good guys and bad guys have a variety of phenotypes (there are good guys who are darker than the main villain). There's nothing wrong with having bad guys who aren't white Christians. Evil transcends race, religion, gender, everything!

VampireQueenEffeffia In reply to JamesE82 [2013-05-20 09:16:17 +0000 UTC]
Wow, that is so unfair! Even if you were to have 7,000 villains, and 6,999 were Caucasian and one was Jewish, everyone would be like, "U RACIST A-HOLE111!" But all that aside, it sucks that you got bashed for having a bad guy be Jewish. I could understand if they were really stereotypically portrayed, but if they were like every other human being, then you have no reason to be bashed.

Nice stamp There's one thing bothering me though, you've got nationalities mixed with races... The majority of French, German and Italian people are white. (Well, Italians are Mediterranean, which is still technically Caucasian).
It might be improved by having subject agreement in your list;
Just because a character is . . .
Black
Indian
Arabic
Asian
Hispanic
Native American
Any race except for white
It doesn't mean I'm being racist.
Yes, I'm a grammar nazi. Sorry Though I do agree with you, I get real sick and tired of the "That's racist!" hypocrisy

Thank you for that input I may have to make a remake including stereotypes, because what seems to me is that most people, for whatever reason, view it as being racist if a character isn't white and has an American/British accent. Like it's somehow racist if an Italian in one's work has an Italian accent. (And to that I say: So what? If an Italian has an accent, are they racist?) But again, thanks
And no harm done in that ^_^

How the fuck is having a non-white OC racist!? Honestly people. Now, if the character was constantly bashed or portrayed negatively, then it's probably racist.
π: 0 β©: 1
VampireQueenEffeffia In reply to SparkMaster37 [2013-03-31 03:23:12 +0000 UTC]
My mom says that way back when most movies were based off of literature and comics, it was during a time where Africans, Mexicans, Germans, etc., were not portraid as a means of exclusion. If that's not the case, then they were only in a comic as means of being a humiliation. Nowadays the trend has caught on so much that it seems racist for them to be included. Any African American or Asian villain is shomehow automatically racist, a German villain is somehow automatically a WWII reference, but all of a sudden, you stick a white or Russian guy in there it's okay.
I honestly don't consider it racist. It's not unless it's used for humiliation. That's why I made this stamp.

That's good. The more anti-stereotypes there are, the less likely it is for certain "roles" or "castings" in the OC universe to accept any race.
