This photo depicts a woman who worked as a guard at the infamous Khmer Rouge prison, Toul Sleng (also called S22).
All of the guards at this prison played an active role in torturing prisoners to force them to confess their betrayal of the Khmer Rouge regime and to induce them to name co-conspirators.
This photo was defaced by visitors to the prison. I can't help but wonder how many of these visitors knew people who were imprisoned there and if they are the ones that damaged this and similar photos of guards.
