Description
for those a bit confused as to what this is, see here [link] , this is effectivly the add on of the second wave.Right let’s give this roster a vast amount more explanation, I said I wouldn’t make thousand son background up, but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to pass the time, so long as it’s not heavily represented on the models it’ll be an easy fix in the future. All that follows is based on information post ‘forge world: betrayal’, meaning a thousand sons is somewhat limited, and things like the index astartes completely obsolete (and I reckon the new chaos codex is a bit too vague).
House rules: just a note on my gaming style before I begin background. I use betrayal, the additional rules to make them more ‘thousand sonny’ are as follows: all squads have the brotherhood of psykers rule, and select a power from any of the disciplines in the 40k rulebook. No squad gets force weapons, vehicles do not get powers. Centurions and praetorians may take up to 2 additional mastery levels for 10 points each, and the praetorian may upgrade a weapon to force for 10 points. Thallax cohorts may be taken as an elite choice (never scoring) so long as a techmarine is present in the force; if a forge lord is present, they may be taken as either elites or troops (but still never scoring).
On legion size: at present legion strength is about 9000 according to a thousand sons, this is unlikely to remain the figure however, as it would put them 70,000 legionnaires smaller than the second smallest legion (raven guard). Working on the legions obsession with the number 9, let’s say there are 9 companies each of 1000 astartes to a fellowship, making the legion size a much more comfortable 81,000 while still being on the latter end of the legion size scale.
Ranking officers: this is purely for me, and I’ll scrap all this should forge world/black library deem it obsolete
Sergeant: squad commander, rank denoted by purple tabard. Some more combat orientated sergeants may choose a different style, instead pinning the robe to the waist, hanging loose at the back.
Lieutenant: higher ranking squad commander, intermediate between squad sergeants and respective captains, the number of lieutenants will vary in companies to the discretion of said captain, one in the pool of lieutenants will replace the captain should he perish. Rank denoted by purple vest, though they can still choose to wear the tabard as well if they wish.
Captain: company commander, different variants exist (assault captain, lance captain etc). Usually wear purple vest and tabard, though can opt for something different should they choose (see assault captain Menthu).
Magister: fellowship commander (notably Ahzek Ahriman, Phosis T’kar, Hathor Maat etc). Wear long purple vests and cream tabard, though can opt for something different should they choose.
Cult icons: almost all thousand sons are psykers, and cults transcend ranks, thus a tactical marine might be more powerful/skilled than his officer. Gold shields are used to denote prestige in a cult, normally worn around the waist, size and shape vary. Cult magisters (not to be confused with fellowship magisters) wear red shields, as they would’ve accumulated too many gold shields to wear effectively.
On Weapons: the Tigrus bolter is the standard legion bolter, though tactical marines excelling in ballistic skill are awarded umbra-ferrox pattern bolters, and these marines will in time move to seeker squads and devastator squads. Ranking officers, specialist units and veterans also carry umbra-ferrox bolters. Legionnaires excelling in melee are awarded chainswords, and often move to assault squads.
----------------------------------
Right, for those still reading, we’re not done yet, that was just my general thousand son ‘background’, now for roster dissection. Given it’s hard to distinguish squads, imagine the roster is split down the middle into Column A (left) and B (right) and by row’s numbered 1-12 (column B only having rows 2-9).
Column A, row 1: Phosis T’kar, Magister of 2nd Fellowship, need I say more. Champion Menes, most skilled and venerated warrior of 2nd fellowship, more info here [link] . Forge Lord Ptah, lord techmarine and quartermaster of 2nd fellowship. Maintains a Thallax bodyguard cohort (see column A, row 12)
Column A, row 2: Phosis T’kar’s chosen bodyguard and fellowship standard bearer (banner not shown), rank denoted by dual purple tabards
Column A, row 3-6: tactical squad of 4th company, 2nd fellowship, sergeant carries the ‘Ars Goatia’, an ancient text recovered by the squad on Terra
Column A, row 7-8: tactical combat squad of 4th company, 2nd fellowship. Current sergeant is a Terran and flesh change survivor.
Column A, row 9: tactical support squad of 4th company, 2nd fellowship, dedicated tank hunters, specialise in warp jumping.
Column A, row 10: tactical support squad of 4th company, 2nd fellowship. Sergeants MKII helmet is handed down from sergeant to sergeant since the legions founding; was remodelled after the finding of Magnus.
Column A, row 11: devastator squad of 4th company, 2nd fellowship. Lieutenant and two battle-brothers are Terran flesh change survivors. Low squad mortality rate attributed to squad skill in precognition, allowing unparalleled aim and swift execution of any threat.
Column A, row 12: Thallax Cohort, Forge Lord Ptah’s bodyguard, outfitted as tank hunters, also used as shock troops to assist Cataphract engines (ergo the blue colour scheme).
Column B, row 2-3: assault squad of 7th assault company, 2nd fellowship. Lieutenant is Captain Menthu’s closest advisor (if only because he’s the only one who can keep up with him).
Colmn B, row 4-6: sky hunter squad of 7th assault company, 2nd fellowship. [right, this needs explaining, the guy on row 4 is actually assault captain Menthu of 7th company, so should belong on row 1, however at present if I made him a captain the other jetbikers would be illegal, so he has to act as a sergeant until I get more jetbikes]. Captain Menthu might be considered a hothead of captains, and a need for speed makes him a rarity in the thousand sons: a loose cannon. However his talent in precognition and effective lightning assaults keep him from crashing into titans, so he endures.
Column B, row 7-9: rapier battery of 3rd lance company, 2nd fellowship, lieutenant is a Terran and flesh change survivor. The battery does not comprise of powerful psykers, but skill with their laser destroyers mean other astartes don’t laugh too hard.

Well, Forge World just released the Thousand Sons Legion army stuff (alongside the Space Wolves Legion). So who knows right now how accurate this is.
Unless you got the rulebook?

I know how accurate it is, this was made 4 years ago, I have all the up-to-date information. In fact I've entirely scrapped this army so I can start again proper, with an airbrush metallic scheme, unique armour marks and pads, the whole works. They'll go up on dA sooner or later.

knifes are from the tigrus bolter kits on forge world, the chainswords comes with the assault marines, things like axes come from the massive special weapon kit also on forge world, and lastly, the khopesh's i got from kromlech on ebay

Quite interesting.
Rather aggressive style of team-building, especially including Thallaxii Cohort cadre, so this may be Pyrae.

perhaps, though who ever accused me of not being aggressive, as for the thallax, they're basically so beasty we in my heresy circle all wanted to use them without need for a secondary detachment, this is the solution we agreed upon, and can all use

I was already excited for the next Forge World Horus Heresy book. But with material like this, I'm just as excited to see it in the hands of people more creative than I to see how the rest of the legion gets fleshed out. Fantastic work!

thanks a lot, and it looks like we don't have as long to wait for massacre as next games day, in fact it might come out as early as may, if the horus heresy weekender is anything to go by

Looks wonderful, now to build it
Or is that not the intention??
Must say, I've read your text and you have thought it over very nice.
I was at first a little confused with the red and gold shields because I couldn't find them in the picture but after a better look I did find em and the confusion ceased to exist
Only the purple tabbards and vests, their wearers being allowed to opt for something different is style [or sometimes something completely different], wouldn't that become a little confusing for yourself as well??

VangarShriek In reply to DoomsdayGeneral [2013-04-03 06:17:44 +0000 UTC]
right lets see
i do intend to build all this, in fact i'm already half way, everything here is either built or bought.
the thing with the gold shields is they aren't planned out, i only apply them once the marines are built (same with grenades and pouches), for example the assault marines and chosen don't have any because they aren't yet built
the whole rank thing with tabards and vests actually wasn't my original idea, i was just trying different robes out. only when i wrote all this did i decide on it, [or sometimes something completely different] is my way of breaking my own rule
thanks a lot for taking the time dude
