Avril has such expressive eyes, and I've tried to capture that without doing it in a photorealism style - how did I do?Here is the beautiful reference image: [link]

Soon I'll be uploading a walkthrough on the lips for this piece which will hopefully give complete beginners an idea on how to vexel without feeling the need to 'livetrace' or posterize first.

I'm not into digital art, let alone vexels, yet I wanted to let you know that I found your critique very useful, especially the bit about the colors. As a traditional painter I always get the feeling that my characters' faces look flat, like they're wearing make-up, so I might give the "gray towards the corner of the eyes, a little red around the nose area" bit a try.

Reading the critique I can't really say you read that in the artist comments: "Your aim for "photorealism" has been done very well in terms of working from the exact colouring of the reference image." ... but alright. That said, I didn't work with the exact colours from the reference image either. I generally do for the skin, use the eye-dropper tool to pick up some useful colours, and I think for some of it on the lips, but for the most part it's just picking something similar and changing it if it doesn't work.
Anyway. Thanks for the compliments on her lips, I agree that they're difficult.. I think it's possibly the shape of them? As for her nose, yes I agree that I need a little more definition around the edge.

This was more in reference to the skin shading rather than the eyes
To counter act colours in the skin, you go for their opposite, whcih the opposite of red is green. So by adding very low opacity gradients of green you could neutralise the red

I know you worked hard on this, with many long hours. Your results are very impressive. With that though, I'd like to offer a few things I "see", from my perspective as a viewer, that look "off"/wrong/flawed...
First up is those eyes. Your lashes are just, well superior there... But those eyes lack a little "shine" and luster. Accurate? Yes... But also a little "flat". Real eyes are moist and supple, like her lips. The eyes need a little gloss I think. I also see a bit of shading on the bridge of the nose is off, as well as the underside. She sorta looks a little "pig snouted" as a result.. Like one nostril "appears" to be larger than the other. Again, that's entirely possible based on the real life person... But it still looks a little funny.. I also think those eyebrows shouldn't be solid. I love how you did the darker brown strands, to show the hairs... And I think they would've looked more impressive if they were ALL strands to make the eyebrows, rather than a base shape under the darker strands... And I see a lot of edges on her cheeks, specifically the cheek by the pink hair. I think some subtle gradients would've worked better than having all those edges be visible..
Now... Having said all of that Leo... I think this piece shows some REAL talent that you have, and skill that's definitely impressive. You should be proud of this piece.

As the description states, I was hoping for the eyes to be somewhat of a focal point for this piece, so the feedback on them is very useful - I'll open up the psd again and see what I can add to make them more lively. I also think I'll add some subtle signle lashes into the block I have to draw the viewer in more toward the eyes. As for the eyebrows, they aren't actually on a base layer (as far as I remember, anyway!) it's made up of strands on top of each other at different opacities, so changing the opacity levels around until it looks right won't be too much of a challenge
Being able to see the layers is something I've always loved about vexel art.. but never the way I do it. [link] That is how I always assume it's going to turn out, but mine never do, whenever I leave some layers that are more 'obvious' than the rest, it always looks out of place. It's something I'm working on ^^ I'll see how gradients look, or I'll add in some extra layers so that it blends better - same goes for the dark areas around her eyes on the 'pink side'.
The nose is something that I couldn't get right from the start >.> What I came up with is the best I could manage at the time, but since looking at it again now I think I can make it look a little better. I've never been a fan of vexelling noses

The detail in this is astounding, and everything looks beautiful. I love the hair, and how you chose to use pink on one side. I think the eyelashes stand out a little too much, and would benefit either from being a little more defined, or having a gradient to make them darker near the base, to give a curved look.
