Description another bit o' character concept art for the Bomango project that i kind of liked, this time with a little antagonist flavor.

As fun as it would be to have Gogo kick all the ass, it would get a little tiresome without ANY characters who kick back. I wanted to create a character or two who can put the screws to my heroine & the gang and hold their own (or better).

Saf (short for "Safara") seems like a good start: Fast, clever, razor sharp, and adaptive...someone who looks like they could sprint right up a wall and kick your fool head off in the same breath. It opens up possibilities.

alright, enough distraction. i've got commissions to complete.

Probably not your main goal here, but she gives me a "Fire Aspect Dragon-Blooded" vibe here.

...I'm not sure if Gogo (and by extension Didi) would be a Lunar or some form of Infernal, but either way I like where this line of thought is going.

You know...I'm not sure why, but this character sure gives me this Rugal Bernstein vibe.

Evil, but not Wicked. Confident, but not Arrogant. Respectable, but also a force to be reckoned with.

Nice.

i think it'd be a nice curveball if she DID kick Gogo's butt. Often, hehe

I like the design! With her skin tone and eye color she almost looks like she should fit in with the Bomango girls (common backstory element?), which is an eye-catcher right off the bat. But her expression and body language all give off a vibe that definitely sets her apart in a way that when I pulled up this picture I couldn't mistake her for Didi with red hair dye in a million years. Your costume design is always stellar, because even in what's otherwise kind of just a neutral standin'-around pose, albeit a pretty strong and confident variant, "fast, clever, razor sharp, and adaptive" all come across just from looking at her. Sleek lines, form-fitting fabrics that don't hinder movement, and jeez that smirk.

Curious to see what kind of antagonist this new kid will be. I wanted to say 'villain' at first but I don't think that being an antagonist to Gogo Bomango necessarily makes you a villain right off the bat. (Much as we love her, taking her down might actually qualify anyone as a hero.)

Did wanna say though, constructive crit in regards to the gauntlet: It seems to my eye at least like the elbow should be angled slightly more toward her back, away from the viewer. Something about the elbow pad being fully visible on the viewer's side of her arm kind of seems to throw it off balance and make the gauntlet look a lot more clunky in the middle.

Absolutely amazing.

Also, while watching this, I'm listening to Judas Priest - I'm a rocker [link] That chorus somehow fuses with this character and I feel like a million lightning strikes are emanating from this one, single picture of a character I've never seen before. Standing proud and on guard; the gates of heavy metal unleash her hungry spirit into the air and fills all space with massive, flashing lights. All shall be strength.

Yeah, it's a good character design alright.

And yeah, bombastic rock anthems is probably a good choice of music when continuing development of Safara.

Where did you get the idea for the name Safara from? Does it come from the Arabic word sifr, which means zero? That's what first popped up in my head. Is this some kind of "Miss Incognita" type we have here?
And I am a bit curious about the symbol on her chest. What does it mean?
Other than that, I love her. I don't see her as being all evil and that. Surely she will be a (relatively) good character from time to time, right? Let me know if I'm completely mistaken or not.

VanHeist In reply to rickardspaghetti [2012-04-30 21:14:55 +0000 UTC]

I believe "Safara" itself is an iteration of an African name for "fire" (i like the phonetics of the name anyway...sounds classy and blazing). Since Didi is the "anti-Gogo" in a few ways, it seems like a challenge to envision someone who's a different kind of counterbalance.

I'm not certain how "evil" this character will be either. I think it would be fantastic if she simply shared the same vanity/alpha complex as Gogo. That'd be some fireworks

rickardspaghetti In reply to VanHeist [2012-05-01 01:09:25 +0000 UTC]

So they're more like rivals than enemies then? If that's so, wouldn't they actually enjoy fighting eachother? Who do you reckon would win in a battle between them?

Love her name btw. Will you be consistent with how your different characters' names will sound like, or will you go "Aerith and Bob"?

VanHeist In reply to rickardspaghetti [2012-05-01 19:03:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure who would win if they really went at it, honestly...that makes it kind of exciting and risky.

I make no promises of consistency with names, although if you're going to go with complicated or weird names, brevity's your friend. "Saf" sounds a lot less pretentious and oh-so-exotic than constantly calling someone "Safara", particularly in a world where one of the main characters is "Andy", short for "Andrew".

i've never really minded slapdash name systems in fiction, though. Sometimes names get a little flowery and silly, or sound like someone pulled a muscle trying to come up with something fantastic and spilled a bunch of apostrophes all over their word processor.

rickardspaghetti In reply to VanHeist [2012-05-01 20:05:13 +0000 UTC]

You DO seem pretty knowledgeable regarding names. How many apostophic sins have you witnessed in your time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rickardspaghetti In reply to VanHeist [2012-05-01 20:54:58 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if I'm that knowledgeable. Small things I've picked up in the conlanging community. I don't know much about Salish really, but I do know it's quite (in)famous for its consonant clusters. Some words don't even have vowels. Handle it with caution unless you wanna swallow your own tongue.

As for apostrophes, the obvious ones really. Star Trek(T'Pau T'Pol), Mass Effect(Liara T'soni), some more I cannot remember the names of right now. Yeah. You hear alot of people hate on this in the conlanging community, but that's pretty much the only place you hear it.

Yes, generally a good story needs a good antagonist. However, I think there is space for someone to "hold their own' without doing the same thing that the protagonist does.

Gogo also struck me as something of a Hercules short of greek tragedy - she is her own worst enemy at times.

VanHeist In reply to hypergojira [2012-04-29 23:39:57 +0000 UTC]

The older i get, the less i enjoy antagonists who are just "evil". When pushed by emotion, desire, or circumstance, any character can be capable of almost anything. It'll take more than a few pictures and me describing someone as "the bad guy" to make a good antagonist.

And yeah, i think i've managed to make a protagonist who fumbles across the line now and again, but again, there needs to be more character development. much work to do!
