I took many of my characters and tangled them up in their own little dark Masquerade Ball.

To hide behind a mask, and see
The world without its colours -
Everything scaled down to grey,
Where everything that was, isn't
And all can change in a heartbeat.

To wonder at the fading lights;
To catch a glimpse of a foreign star -
Imagination runs wild throughout
A night of magic and freedom,
Time away from the mundane.

To reach for an alternative,
And wonder at the maybes;
Might-have beens become reality
Or twist themselves in the mind,
As falsehoods can intensify into truth.

To swear to a strong belief
In a god that you've never seen;
A deluded kind of serenity
That protects the unknowing,
Wraps humanity in its innocence.

To stare at the masks,
And dream in idyllic colour
Of a fantastic surreality
That exists only in the safety
Of our secreted souls.
