This is one of the reasons I was really on the fence about Naruto.
On the one hand, for shounen genre, the manga had a literal abundance of girls, and they were drawn in a surprisingly non-fanservice way, too. They were allowed to look as if they worked out, with regular-sized boobs, legs that aren't spaghetti-thin, and without skimpy clothes. They looked as ready to kick ass as their male counterparts.
And then... they didn't. Well, at least not often, as far as I remember, and certainly not as much as they could have. In the end, it was all about the guys. Again. Kishimoto really missed the chance to create material that diverts from the regular shoujo/shounen categories.
Plus, the SasuSaku story will forever irk me. It was SO one-sided and obsessive and unhealthy that i just couldn't believe that they got shoehorned into this romantic happily-ever-after where (of course) the woman-wife stays at home and looks after the kid(s) while daddy is out travelling the world, having adventures.
I thought Sakura's story was about stepping out of Naruto and Sasuke's shadow, to prove herself equal to and independent from them. I really hoped that her crush on Sasuke would be resolved as just that: A teenage crush. That they would stay friends, but find someone different (or no one at all. It's not a crime if not all characters end up neatly paired up).

My standard line for Sakura's repeated role as sidelined healer is that "White Mages get no respect."

It's a bit late to be responding to this but she really took off after her seal showed up. I was kind of thinking the same thing but man when you think about the fact that ever since her training with Tsunade started she's been fighting severely under powered and going up against people they have been that is damned impressive. And once that seal was active she more than showed her worth.

The problem was following the whole Dragon Ball formula, wherein every time something new happens, the character(s) have to power up...being the descendents of a literal god probably doesn't help any.

Sakura is a powerful character (sometimes) like when she defeated Sasori but she doesn't really show this powerful side too often..... If she did do things like that more often, than I would see her as a strong character but after the Sasori battle, shes been rather useless....

I still like Sakura. She doesn't need magic power up to deserve respect and admiration for her hard work and efforts in the medical field. If she got no power ups, she would still be a good character. Shonen manga or not.

It seems like there wasn't much effort put into the other characters besides Naruto and Sasuke. I get that he just wanted a story about two bros who become enemies who chose different paths, but come on! Give her more credit! At least, he established her background with FINALLY bringing up her parents...
The rest just rolled out on it's own and she became a bit stagnant, never improving much past...um, what was her last fight? lol It makes sense for a medic to stand on sidelines, and it isn't whether it's a big or small difference, she's still important part of the team and the main character.
Still, a favorite in concept and potential over most as she is one of the few without a blood line or clan. it shows true skill, in my opinion. doesn't come easy for her though...wish he'd explore more too considering she's a 'second tsunade'...which reminds me, Sasuke and Naruto inherited their masters summons...but what about her?! lmao...is it bad planning?

The lack of effort put into the other characters is especially sad when you consider that for a 13-14 year old series Naruto and Sasuke don't have that much development. They were both orphaned young enough that they couldn't have taken care of themselves unassisted, yet we never learn who the hell raised them! They're stated to be best friends and rivals but the manga barely shows enough support for them to rivals let alone friends. Kishimoto is either a hack or a troll.
