Description Shrunken heads, or tsantsas, were taken as trophies by the Jivaro indians of south america. Heads of assassinated enemies were taken, the skull was removed, and the skin shrunken through a process of boiling and then filling it with hot sand and stones. The eyes and mouth were generally sewn shut, to prevent the spirit of the victim from exiting the tsantsa and exacting revenge.
