Description
Still trying to sharpen it, think I'm getting the hang of it now, tell me if it looks sharper to you, looks sharper to me atleast, cleaning the edges up.So starting another value/portrait practice, this is the rough so far. Actually picking the values form the photo which is kinda cheating, but I am learning from it.
Little bit more work on it, moved the proportions round a bit too. Saving each of these updates seperatley too so will put them together into a "process" file at the end.
So this is getting to the stage where I'm having trouble with it now, could do with some tips really, losing the definition in the face a bit when I start to blend and not quite sure how to keep it.

I really can't help you with anything here, because you're so much better than me~
just wanted to tell you, I fell in love
His face is gorgeous, and I think little flaws make a face more attractive~

Hehe cheers, he's a model so understandable :d. I think slightly flawed faces look better too, glad you liked it .

well, to me it looks sharp enough all the time actually... leave it.
though there was an earlier version, on which the eyes were clearer/brighter. that was the best one i'd say.
but however, it looks great from the beginning on. don't bother too much.

Hehe cheers, well I'm still working on it anyway, haven't even finished the eyes properly yet so they should be better by the end of it.

as long as you are satisfied with the result, everything's fine. ^^

His mouth looks very good, the cheeks are nice and smooth too, i think the nostrils look a little weird though (Especially the eft one). it's a great painting!

Cheers, yeah I need to fix the nostrils still a wip though so I'll get one, the form is better now though I think, was losing definition before but think it's coming back.

Have you try flipping the image? It usually helps you spot mistakes you normally wont see during the painting process. I'd say it's coming along nicely, you are right about loosing definition though, it's either the nose/mouth moving slightly to the left, or move both eyes slightly to the right. Also the nose is slightly crooked.
Anyway, yea trying flipping the whole image, keep it up

Yeah I'm constantly flipping it, the likeness I'm not bothered too much about though, it's the painting that concerns me. Those cheeks especially, I mean the shading on the photo is quite subtle and when i blend it, just makes the face start going all soft bit like it is now.

Can wait to see this finished! WHY did I never think of taking the values from the reference, ohmygod, I just realized my whole life has been pointless WASTE (not really, just the last 2 months but the point stands!) OTL

Ha well at least it's only 2 months, there's loads of mistakes in art to make so the earlier you learn not to make them the better. It's best to practice learning how to see the value though rather than picking them, but picking them can be a good way of teaching yourself too

XD I only got back to drawing portraits in the last two months. Thanks so much for the tips ! The main problem I had was the negative influences on my drawing style (I did a 360 from realism to manga and got a tablet, and the switch did not work out too well) and I used to be good at drawing portraits *sob* but not any more.

Well to draw manga well you need to know realism the two are linked , manga is just drawing it in a different style. Portraits are the hardest things to draw though, you have to be EXACT to get a likeness. It's all about angles and measurements, checking the angles are right and the distances between features are right. So if you want to get good at portraits keep practicing angles and measurements, compare the distance of the eye with the tip of the nose, the distance from the bottom of the nose to the chin etc etc. Also the angles, are the eyes at the right angle, is the face at the right angle and all the tiny angles too like the various angles of the eye.
Good way to practice is to try some angle drawings where you just draw something all in angles. There's also a good method for practicing whereby you get 2 sheets of paper , draw some random dots on one of them then try and reproduce the dots exactly on another piece of paper. You measure the distance for the first dot accurately so you know it's right then from there try and get all the dots in the right place by lining up the angles and measuring them, it's hard but worth a try at least once .

Thank you so much! You are so helpful, this helped me more than anything else by the way
I've always thought realism easy compared to manga, as you said its angles and measurements--mostly using your eyes to copy something, while manga takes more imagination (which I lack). I think I'll go draw something now ^-^
Please consider making some tutorials, they'd be extremely popular!

Np, good to know I helped you I know what you mean, its easy in the way as your copying from life so you have something to draw from rather than nothing, but the more you draw from life the more you build up your knowledge then next time you draw from your imagination you'll know how to draw it because you've studied it and remember how to draw it.
I may make some tutorials yeah, they do take a surprisingly long time to make though. Any particular subject you want a tutorial on?

^-^ One more thing-- where do you find good reference pictures? Is there a certain section on deviantart?
Thanks for considering my idea! My preference would be quite unusual: facial structure. I always have trouble with the jawline, cheekbone and how they vary by ethnicity/age/gender... Sorry, I now this would be too difficult, but its more of an idea to consider than a request
and thanks again!!

Mjranum stock is full of great references and poses, just google mjranum stock and you should get his deviant art account first result. I also have trouble with the cheekbone area and the variations in it so not in much of a position to do a tutorial on it, but it's something I pay attention to myself so once I get enough knowledge on it then maybe I'll write some tips .

(sorry for taking so long to reply...) Those are great. My drawings are suddenly looking more human-like, and thats a miracle itself(I'm not even joking--in the last 3 days I have improved more than in the last 3 months!) xD I'm glad you didn't dismiss the idea completely then, and I must say that your portraits are amazing. Thanks again for all your help!

Cheers, well thats good to know . It's great when you find simple things that make a big difference, I'll list some I can think of off the top of my head. Mentioned in the small tutorial about the line thickness which is important, keep remembering that. Another simple thing that really helped getting my lines better was drawing with my arm rather than wrist. Like hold you hand and wrist still and move your arm instead, makes a good difference in drawing smoother lines and is something easily learned.
Learning the basic planes or just thinking about them at least is really helpful in making your drawings better and especially your shading. Helps you understand what you're doing rather than just copying. Like the bridge of the nose is brighter than the sides as it's a higher plane than the rest, and theres a little dark line on the rim of the nose normally that seperated the top plane from the bottom. So planes and understanding the basic shadings makes a huge difference. You need to know what a core shadow terminator halftone means before you start any shading, and there's plenty of sites that will tell you. The most usefully books you could read are Andrew loomis books, which you can download free from saveloomis.org or just google them and you'll find them. They are like the goly grail of art knowledge, explains everything. Although when I first read them years ago I really didn't understand all of them that well, but they make so much sense now, so once you have a little knowledge they are really very helpfull, but they also are even if you're just starting out too, some sections especially explain the proportions of the human body really well.
ALSO draw light keep practicing drawing light then darkening after, something I have trouble with alot myself still, number of times I've started heavily shading an area then realising it was wrong. Try and make sure your sketch is right before you start adding darker lines to it.
