Hair chalk would definitely work because that's what it is designed for ^_^ The application definitely takes some practice!

I tried it on my hair which is dark brown and it didn't really work. You could barely barely see any purple

Maybe the pastels werenΒ΄t opaque enough. If they were opaque they should cover your hair.
Though it could also have to do with your hair oils or styling products. Was it clean and without anything on? If you already have something on it then itΒ΄ll be harder for the pastel to have a surface to stick on.

Thank you so much for this! I have to bleach my hair for a cosplay and since I try to not dye my hair too often this will be a nice way to add my funky colours back in until after the convention!

I tried it today, but it didn't work v_v
I used sofr pastels from Koh-I-noor and my hair is dark, but you wrote it works on it too.
Can you might give me a hint what I did wrong?

If the colour isn't bright enough try adding a layer of white pastels before the colour. It may also have to do with the type or condition of your hair, if in doubt check with a hairstylist who can actually look at your hair and offer suggestions

I didn't have chalk pastels, so I tried oil pastels and when I tried to brush it, it didn't stay...
I really want to try this the right way though, because it looks really cool! I used a gradient of orange, pink and white with the oil pastels and it looked really cute, but yeah... when I brushed it it got stuck in the brush, and if I weren't to brush it, it'd look powdery >.< I have got to get myself some chalk pastels to try this! ._. Awesome tutorial though and congrats on the DD! :3

I really wouldn't suggest using oil pastels as they have the wrong texture and could possibly damage hair. The colours you used sound really cute, good luck if you do try again using chalk pastels

What did you do to prep your hair and what do you suggest to do in order to prep dark hair? I just tried it on my friends (dark hair and it dyed my fingers but did nothing to her hair. I am not sure if the trouble we had was because of her hair being "virgin" hair that has never been dyed before or if it was something else. I was really excited about trying this and I hope it will still work. Please reply.

VioletLeBeaux In reply to Lycasis [2013-05-07 03:08:09 +0000 UTC]
I didn't prep my hair at all but as it's such a light colour it's easier for me to achieve bright results. For dark hair you can add a layer of white pastel as a base before the colour. You could also use hairspray first as a base to give the hair more grip for the colour. It may also be the kind of pastel you're using, make sure to use very soft chalk pastels. That said, everyone has different hair and nothing is suitable for every hair type so it will depend on the person Hope that helps and good luck!

i actually tried this on my hair today and i have medium/dark brown hair. I advise using something very bright like pink or orange, and don't hold the hair spray too close to your hair. I also found that rubbing the chalk diagonally to horizontally across my hair worked better than doing it vertically. another piece of advice would to be use flexible hold hairspray because i used extra hold, which is all i have atm, and it made my hair extremely stiff and hard to brush, and you'll want an easy brushing, trust me, because the chalk loosens a little with extra hold spray.

As soon as I saw this I had to try it lol, but it didn't come out as vibrant as I hoped it would on my medium dark-ish brown hair .3. I also feel like this is not good for my hair lol it probably dries it out pretty bad, but its still way better than bleach and hair coloring. And still fun!

If you're looking for a brighter colour, try using white as a base before your colour! Good luck

No worries, you might just need to try a softer grade of pastel in that case so more pigment can come off. Different brands have different levels of pigment so that might help
