When I met Phantom (Erik), one of the first things he did was take me on a tour of his little kingdom under the Paris Opéra. It was nice and dark! We go back there a lot now.Related content

Now I wonder why this did not came up earlier
My imagination of Paris underground water is such that it makes me SHIVER seeing someone letting her hand dip into it...

There are at least two kinds of underground water in Paris. There's the sewers, which are definitely to shiver about. (And don't worry, I wouldn't.) Then there's the big "lake" under the Opéra. The water there smells OK and as far as I know it's even safe to drink, though I'm not curious to try.
Reminds me of a scene in an old Woody Allen/Diane Keaton movie ("Manhattan" I think is the title), where the two are out rowing in some New York river or something. Woody dips his hand in the water, and it comes up sludgy. Eww! That's his reaction as well as ours.

Of course. Somehow the idea that the "lake" under the Opéra was not connected to the Parisian sewers (at least not in such a way that waters from there could flow back into the lake) did not appear to me...

I guess something in the play or the movie led me to suppose that they were separate. I think the idea of them being the same crossed my mind but somehow got ruled out. At any rate, we'll have to take Euthie's word for it.
