S
tumna Model-1972
The workhorse of the Stranian military.

Overview:

The ST-72 officially designated as the “Stumna Select-fire rifle model 1972” or simply “Stumna model 1972”, is a third generation infantry rifle Designed by Herrick Stumna.

It first saw service with Stranian forces in the Western wars.
After the conflict Herrick Stumna began improving his rifle after analyzing the rifle’s performance in battle. This led to the development of the STM-72, an improved version of the ST-72. Stumna thus began retrofitting all ST-72 into STM-72.

Design:

Operation: The STM is gas operated with a long-stroke gas piston. Upon ignition of the cartridge, gas is diverted into the gas cylinder which drives the piston and bolt carrier rearwards and causing the bolt to cam and unlock from the barrel. Excess gasses are vented, the amount of gas ventilated can be adjusted using the gas adjustment system.

New features [ST-72]: The ST-72 has several new features making it superior to the older ST-52. This includes a dust cover that shields the gap in the bolt carrier, a rubber butt pad, a new stock and hand guard, simpler iron sights, a picatinny rail, an adjustable gas block for higher pressure loads, an enlarged and improved extractor, a new barrel, last round bolt hold open, and internal changes to simplify operation and manufacture.

New features [STM-72]: The STM-72 further improves upon the ST-72, with several tweaks. Some changes include: A new muzzle device, standard fiberglass furniture, a new “lock” hand guard, a new heat shield, lightened bolt, further improved barrels, and several small internal modifications.

Accessories: The ST-72 can mount a bayonet or grenade launcher and a suppressor. As well as any picatinny compliant attachments or optics.

5.45x45mm cartridge: Like in the ST-52, the ST-72 uses the 5.45x45mm intermediate rifle cartridge. While still an intermediate cartridge, the 5.45 is significantly powerful, boasting high penetration and range. Especially with the standardization of ammunition. AP, FMJ, JHP, Tracers, and HP cartridges are all in standard military service.

Magazines: Similarly to the ST-52 the ST-72 uses disposable magazines made of stamped aluminum or stainless steel. However new plastic magazines have been developed for the ST-72, being lighter and more durable than the stamped magazines. Most units still use the stamped magazines however due to their abundance.

Soldiers can request authorization from a CO or armorer to change attachments to their rifles, most often these are different stocks, optics, hand-guards, or grips.
Stranian use of hollow point ammunition is highly controversial — OUTSIDE of Strania.
Herrick Stumna is not a native Stranian; but is from Küsdanlangde, but is regarded as a Stranian, with citizens and officials referring to him as a Strani (Страни) or native Stranian.
The STM-72 is often shortened to STM or ST, even if incorrect.
