In Spain, possessed accompany the saints in procession, with a hood like that.
It's called "The Procession of the Holy Company"

They are different types of hoods, and the people belong to "cofradías";
by carrying the heavy "pasos", or saints'/Christ's images, they are rendering cult to God and doing penitence. Some of them even go barefoot.
This hood is more of an executioner's hood back in the middle ages, or maybe from the Inquisition.
