Done with Painter 11 and photo reference. I like how strong the painterly background came out. I'm not so sure some of the brush strokes on the face came through as well.I put 10-15 hours in this picture. I'm amazed I got so much out with so little time. It's pretty true to life. Artistically, I didn't get enough dark darks and medium darks. I have a perennial habit of blanding out my work as I retouch. I'm going to be a lot more conscious of it in the future as I get better at finding my way around the color wheel.
Not that any will ask, but he has a farmer's tan and he got sunburned that day, heh heh. I think it came through well, but I could see an angle where someone thought I got lost.

Hey bro.. I like the effort you're putting in, it really shows. What little advice I can offer would be.. perhaps this.. When you approach the painting, block in your shadow first, mmm, if you're studying from a photo right, try not to pick the colour (although I don't think you are, this is good), and also don't try to guess the colour exactly, instead sample the colour from your reference , and paint a blob of this down. Then scramble your colour selector (wheel I think in Painter) and then set the hue/saturation/brightness of the colour you see.. hope that makes sense. I didn't rely on the color picker much for this piece. I'm trying to ween myself off using it altogether. It's interesting how you can cheat the color wheel to make a decent image. I haven't mastered it yet.

there is no anime. not in this picture or in my gallery. I painted this from a picture of a friend that I used as reference.
