He wasn't mad at Kion yet Ukavu's heart hurt. He spent so much time high up Pride Rock gazing out towards the recovering land, able to see the circle of life take its course. Seeing animals drink from the watering hole and all the way to the boarders of their land. Despite all this, he was never even considered by Kion the soon to be leader of the Lion Guard. It didn't make sense to the cub. He spent so much time learning about the land with his mother, Sarabi. He was preparing himself to be the next Keenest of Sight, not born with with the skills to be the fastest, bravest or strongest; yet was well known for his sight.

Ukavu could hardly form words once the king, his stepbrother, announced the new Lion Guard. How could non-lions be the Lion Guard? He wanted to make Sarabi proud, to show her what he's learned. Why would he not be chosen? Had he upset Kion? Was it because he's not blood-related to him? Kion was family to Ukavu, did he not feel the same?

All Ukavu had for comfort was his mother's love. Sarabi being the wise old lioness she was, did all she could to make sure her son smiled and not shed a single tear over this. While feeling empathetic of his feelings a little bit of her soul was grateful her dear son was not chosen to be in the Guard. They would be doing dangerous things out there and after what had happened to Simba, she didn't want something to happen to Ukavu either. Ukavu could stay at Pride Rock and when he got older could be the watchful eyes of the Pride; keeping everyone safe from danger.

I still like to think about the lion cubs that were rejected to be in the Lion Guard for Kion's friends, I'm sure it hurt all of them. Ukavu had it the worst, being a step-cousin to Kion since Sarabi adopted Ukavu. He deals with the complex of being considered in the royal family but also isn't. Maybe I'll draw Ukavu with Kion and Kiara someday. Also this is first time I drew him as a cub!
