I always considered type to be affinity but not something that would affect certain pokemon too much, especially mammalian ones like sneasel. Still, she's a long way from the north and the humidity must be terrible to her.

When Weavile came onto the scene, everything was shaken up and in its favor. With the physical/special split, Sneasel (and Weavile automatically) went from meh competitively to powerful. Weavile were immediately a top tier pokemon with their quick speed and high attack. With the right moveset, they were dangerous. Today they're not as top tier but still rank high in comp play. Sneasel do as well, just not as highly of course. The evo line really hit the power stride in Gen 5 but ever since then, because Ice type was ignored by GF, they have stagnated a lot.

Really long way once you consider where I'm basing the setting in. But seems like foreign relations between there (the reference) and Johto (in Japan) bring them closer together.
