Description Aki woke up with a startle and looked around, this wasn’t her room, if it was it had changed. It was one of the rooms of the hotel, last thing she remembered was walking to the hotel with.. “Sam!” she said out loud. As she did Sam entered the room,
“Yes?” he said, putting a bag of shopping on the table. “Where were you?” Aki asked, she was still in her clothes from last night “and what am I doing here?”
“You fell asleep, I didn’t want to wake you, so I put you on the bed, I slept on the sofa,”
“So nothing happened?”
“Nope, oh, and the receptionist didn’t see us, he was too busy reading his book, Breakfast?”
“Oh, yes, thanks,” Aki said getting up as Sam began to pour some tea. “What did you buy?”
“Not much, money is rather low, I miss judged the exchange rate on the hotel, I thought it seemed a bit cheap, so breakfast is sparse, oh, and I booked train and ferry tickets,” he smiled as Aki munched a croissant. “Well, I’ll go get changed and pack my stuff,” she said with a half full mouth, walking to the door, “These clothes reek! Anyway, back in 10, then we can go”
“Will your parents mind?”
“Nope, they're dead” She said plainly, before leaving.
Aki walked into the lobby with an over packed bag on her back, Sam threw her a slip of paper, which Read, ‘WEST POINT TO CROCKER’S PORT’ and another attached read, “PORT SAFEHAVEN TO WEST POINT, 1050 DEPARTURE,”
“Oh” Aki paused “Good,” she added hesitantly
“But?” Sam asked, waiting for her to continue,
“Lao Tyen yeh Sam! its ten thirty,”
“What? No, its nine fifteen, see” he showed her his watch
“Jien tah-duh guay Sam, its Ten Thirty, see!” She pointed at the clock above her head
“Oh” Sam said. Before grabbing his bag and running out of the lobby

Sam sat down in the Chair of café as Aki looked out the large glass window that gave a view from the rear of the boat as the Taurilian coast slowly began to disappear below the horizon. They had got to the train as the doors were closing and Sam had nearly lost a foot in the process, after which Sam had fallen asleep, taken by surprise by how quiet the train was. After reaching the end of journey they had transferred to the ferry, a far less subtle blue and white monstrosity of a ship with ‘Omnimunda Transport’ emblazoned on the side, of which they were now sat in one of the many Cafés on board sipping over prized coffee in an attempt to wake themselves up.
“Did you find anything?” Aki asked as she warmed her hands on the Latte and turned away from the rain splattered window to see if Sam had bought anything.
“Nope, unless you want a Copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows translated into Crockerian,”
“Hang on, Hin Harrry Potterr Variler Jensar,”
“Can you Speak every language? You don’t have super powers do you?”
“What? No, I just have a skill; I was thinking of going to university next year in Taurilia, they are stupidly generous when it comes to funding, what about you? Do you have a degree, well, are you aiming for one,”
“I’m taking a gap year between my second and third year,”
“Let me guess you are a Sociology student?”
“How did you guess?”
“Oh come on, this area is an Anthropologist’s dream, so many different cultures and peoples, take this guy for example?” They both watched as a man in a long hunting jacket, long fiery red hair and smoking a large cigar, on his back was a long case which blatantly carried a gun. “Where’s he from? Texas?”
“He’s from the Land of Daniel,”
“Come again?”
“The land, it was named after their Emperor, called?” she paused rhetorically “Daniel,”
“Is that a gun in that case, he looks like he’s going trap shooting,”
“He is,” Aki said with a matter of fact tone,
“They have a shooting range,”
“Yup, just up there, launching nice biodegradable targets,”
“This boat has everything,” Sam said in awe, “Except an English copy of Harry Potter,”
“Can’t have everyhing,” Aki said proudly, “Yeah, Danielians, very loud and proud so they petitioned for shooting ranges on OMI boats, I’ve heard the countryside is great for driving, shame I don’t have a driving license,”
“I do, even though,” Sam was interrupted by a man who appeared to be wearing a body suit covered in adverts. He walked up and placed his hands on the back of an empty chair,
“Excuse me, may I purchase shares in the rental of this seating arrangement,”
“Do you mean you want to borrow this chair?”
“Um, yes I do, thank you,” he picked up their chair and carried it over to a table of similarly dressed people. Aki sighed, “Hillsdonians, probably on their way back from a business conference,”
“I’ve got to admit, if we’re going to be stuck on a boat for hours, this would be it,” Said Sam, drinking the last drops of his coffee. He leant back and grabbed a map of the boat from a leaflet rack behind him. “So what’s the plan?” he asked,
“I don’t know, you’re paying for this trip,”
“Am I?” Sam asked with surprise
“Yep, I’m your paid translater and guide remember,”
“Oh yeah, how come agreed to that? Was I drunk,”
“Definitely, very drunk in fact, we both were,” Aki said leaning back in her seat
“Oh yeah,” said Sam staring into middle distance, “Good Times,”
“Anyway, we could watch a movie, most films are probably in English; it’s the local international language, it is what Omnimunda use,”
“I’m not sure whether I can afford to, I want to keep some money so we won’t be sleeping on the streets of Crockeria,”
“Let’s just go up on Deck then, you don’t get sea sick do you?”
“Don’t know, I don’t think so, never been on a ferry before,”

They walked out on deck, and were once again hit by the Taurilian winds. The coast of Nova Cydonia could be seen in the distance and in the other direction over the horizon lay (according to the map they had bought) the straight of Sanctuaria between Sanctuar Island and South Warratatia. They walked towards the bow of the ship away from the distant sounds of Danielians target shooting. Beyond the wind they could hear music playing, a guitar. As they reached the front they saw a few people gathered around a bearded man performing to the crowd, his amplified sound only just reaching above the wind and his long hair blowing in to his face. He was just finishing a rendition of what Sam recognised as ‘Float on’ by Modest mouse to the Disinterested crowd, who dispersed as he finished. Sam walked over, “Good song,” he said in Taurilian as the man switched off his amplifier. “Thankyou, I guess they aren’t fans of Indie around here, most Omnimundans seem to just listen to the latest Pop,”
“Figures, corporation like that,” Aki said, Sam added, “Sorry, but isn’t their a better place to perform, it’s a bit windy,”
“I bought my license to perform at the port, its not my fault all the good spots to perform are taken,”
“True, are you a travelling musician then?”
“Yeah, my name is Nygard Arlengen, Ny, I’m heading to the cultural festival in Crocker’s Fjord, yourselves?”
“The same, hopefully, I’m Sam, this is Aki,” Sam said as they shook hands, Aki waved as well. “You’re English aren’t you?” Ny asked
“Yeah,”
“I like English music, well, British, that’s the larger whole of the country isn’t it?” asked Ny in heavily accented English. “Yes, so is it mostly rock music you play?”
“Mostly, some acoustic, quite a bit of folk, a lot of folk fans in Taurilia,” Ny got his plectrum out and was about to play the first chord when the intercom of the ship beeped and a voice sounded. “Ladies and Gentlemen, this announcement sponsored by Omincola, due to mechanical difficulties the ship will be landing in Sanctuaria City for a brief stopover whilst the engine is fixed, passengers are allowed to leave the ship and explore the picturesque city if they so wish or remain on board and try our 14 new flavours of ice cream available from the ice cream bar on C Deck, thankyou,” Bing bong.
“Sanctuaria Island?” Sam asked to no one,
“Oh, Sanctuaria is brilliant, you’ll love it,” grinned Ny, Sam turned to Aki as she raised one eyebrow and replied in her best English accent , “um, Reach for the lasers?”
They walked down the boarding walkway towards the shore, ahead of them was a haze of light and sound, a thousands pieces of music that together turned into a buzzing noise that gave you a headache. As they stepped onto a quay, a man at a stall shouted over to them,
“Sir? Madam? Can I interest you in some stimulants, something to keep you awake until your next work shift,”
“No thankyou,” Sam said plainly as they walked past.
“Something to calm you down then, Marijuana plus, all the effects of Marijuana but half the calories,” he could tell he had lost them by now but kept on shouting “We also have diet cocaine and extra strength LSD, for a trip the whole day through!”
“This place is more free than Taurilia,” Sighed Sam
“That’s what happens when the government is in the pocket of drug barons,” added Aki.
“Now that’s not true,” said Ny
“It is, it’s a well known fact,”
“No, the drug barons are the government here, they got rid of the middle man, and they’re also their own best customers, so it kind of backfired,” They walked past an open door, out of which blared a synthesised piece of music. “The acid tweaking funk mix of Josh Wink’s higher state of conciousness,” Ny commented
“You like dance music?” asked Aki
“No, but I studied music at university last year, so you end up very well versed,” Ny said Ny, switching back to Taurilian.
“Why is that club open? Is only half past 3” Sam commented,
“24 hours a day, 7 days a week,”
“But they’d kill themselves,”
“The stupider ones do,”
“Have you been here before?” asked Aki to Ny,”
“A few times,” he said. A girl in Leather platforms walked over and slapped in the face, “I don’t think I deserved that,” he said rubbing his cheek and looking at the others.
“Of course you didn’t Captain Jack,” said Sam sarcastically. Ny looked at the girl,
“oh, sorry,” she said in a Mediterranean accent, “You’re” she paused in between each word, looking confused “Not… Haarkon…whoops,” she smiled again, “Sorry, sorry again, I thought you were someone else,”
“Obviously” said Ny
“My names Zina, Are you coming to the party, it’s free,”
“No thanks we’ve only got a few hours here,” said Sam
“but it will be fun,” she leant forward and whispered to them “We’re going to get low, not drugs or anything, just a bit of alcohol”
“Wow,” said Aki in mock reverence, “No Drugs,”
“Keep your voice down! or every salesman on the island will try and sell you happy tablets or something,” She said, pulling her goggles onto her forehead.
“Guys, we can go can’t we, it’ll kill some time,”
“Why not,” sighed Sam.
They walked down an Alleyway, all three of them expecting to be mugged at any moment. They exchange glances and were about to make a run for it when they approached two large Warattatian men who flanked some steps down to a doorway. Still apprehensive, they followed Zina downwards and into what looked like a country pub. Except for the lack of windows it looked very homely with varied bits of weaponry and farming equipment on the walls and a fireplace on one wall. The three of them stared at amazement at the groups of Goths and ravers sat sipping tea or pints of beer.
Zina walked over to the bar, “A pint of ale please Father, Crockerian best,” watching this as well as Zina’s rear Ny leant over and whispered to Sam “She drinks ale?” They walked over to the bar, “How can I help you gentlemen?” asked the barman, who seemed to be wearing a priest’s robe, bearing a golden cup of tea on the front. “Pint of ale please John, in fact, Ale for all?” Zina looked around, the others nodded,
“ok Zina,”
“So, Father” Sam said, being handed a pint by the priest, who then began to clean he bar top, “My name is Bookleafing, but you can call me John,”
“John, um, is this your bar? I thought drinking is a sin”
“Yes, I mean, yes its my bar, and drinking is fine in moderation in my book, and we serve only ales, Bitter, and Tea, Tea is of course key to life, and these are all simple things compared to what goes on in this city, I like to think in my way, I give them an alternative,”
“I’ll drink to that,” said Ny sitting at a table.

---

“Well, we need to get back to our ferry, Thankyou very much for the drinks,” Sam said as he stood up, “sorry we have to dash,”
“Not at all son, safe journey,” John said as he shook Sam’s hand. The three of them said there goodbyes, Ny failing to get a goodbye kiss from anyone. They made there way out the door and past the bouncers. “Whats that?” asked Aki
“Whats what?” said Sam, listening over the rave music
“I can hear,” she ran down the alley and into the street, they looked out into the bay and watched as their ferry burned, the boat was sinking into the water, around it smaller boats could be seen landing in the harbour. In the bay a large grey ship could be seen, its large guns aimed at the city. They saw and then heard the guns fire, “Run!” shouted Ny pulling them into the alley and back down to the bar. “Someone is invading us, are we being at war?!” asked Zina.
“They’re Tittian,” said John with he’s ear to the radio, Sam Sniggered and looked around, “I’m sorry?”
“Tittian, you know from Tittia, religious nuts,” said Aki, “We’re in a lot of trouble,”
“Why, we haven’t wronged them, we’re not doing drugs,”
“We’re sinners, everyone is a sinner,” said John, “I’m a sinner because I am a Teaist preist, you are sinners because you drink, and so forth,”
“So what do we do? Do we run?” asked Aki,
“This bar was part of an old Warratatian defence network back in the imperial days, there is a tunnel behind the fireplace, Sam, pass me that fire extinguisher,” said John before putting out the fire and sliding the stone wall back. Sam made his way to the fireplace then turned round, “Ny! Ny, come on!” Ny sat there looking despondent, he looked up at Sam and Aki. “My guitar was on the boat,”
