Description
Edited for Post Processing Challenge No#6[link]
Original file by Yari [link]
Check out Yari's AKA Wildchild's Gallery & Profile :-
He has some awesome HDRi works, so please drop by and say hi...
as soon as I saw this image I knew what it was meant for
Stock used:-
Astronaut - [link]
Moon Floor - [link]
Earth - [link]
Space Shuttle - [link]
Nebula - [link]
Steps taken:-
Gather all images - load into CS5 and convert all to smart objects (means non-destructive editing)
Yari's image:
Take Yaris original image and tonemapped in Photomatix Pro 4.0 (to bring out details... looks good as HDRi !!)
Clone out trees from roof, wall, and foreground. Used Vanishing point, and utilised the clone tool. (This clones to a specified perspective)
Used pen tool and "drew" around building then converted path to selection ( This I find the easiest way to cut out as you can correct errors on the fly)
From selection created layer mask - (this gives building surround transparency)
used ruler and then straighten to correct horizon - (Since image was taken from low down and an upward angle the keystone is also off, so I thought I would utilise this)
used free transform and warp tool to pull building into required shape (Could also have used puppet tool for this)
Set a black & White adjustment layer to clipping (This affects only underlaying layer - removing clipping affects all underlaying layers)
used free transform to resize and postion building.
Added a layer above building and hand selected random windows - added an inner & outer glow using layer effects (to give impression of lights)
Moon Floor:
Resized to canvas
Set a black & White adjustment layer to clipping (This affects only underlaying layer - removing clipping affects all underlaying layers)
used a clipped adjustment layer of levels (to correct floor contrast to building)
Revisited Yari's building and modified layer mask to blend better with moon floor
Shuttle:
Used pen tool and "drew" around shuttle then converted path to selection ( This I find the easiest way to cut out as you can correct errors on the fly)
From selection created layer mask - (this gives building surround transparency)
used ruler and then straighten to correct horizon
used free transform and warp tool to pull shuttle into required shape
Set a black & White adjustment layer to clipping
used free transform to resize and postion shuttle.
used a clipped adjustment layer of levels (to correct shuttle contrast to building & floor)
Astronaut:
Cut out with pen tool, path converted to selection and layer mask applied from selection.
Set a black & White adjustment layer to clipping
used free transform to resize and postion shuttle. (in original stock the image is mirrored)
used a clipped adjustment layer of levels (to correct shuttle contrast to building & floor & shuttle)
created a new selection from layer mask (of spaceman) and filled this selection with black (for shadow)
applied gaussian blur to shadow layer and then used free transform / skew / warp to correct angle of shadow (then dropped opacity)
Space:
Added backdrop of stars using free transform to get correct alignment
Earth:
Added the earth above backdrop of space withlayer properties set to lighten (This meant I did not have to mask off black outline)
Final adjustments:
Added 3 colour adjustment layers of solid color
1 blue set to overlay 30%
1 brown set to color 45%
1 darker blue to screen 20%
This brought all the seperate pieces together, giving the illusion that they should be.
Added 1 curves adjustment (for levels)
Finally flattened all and duplicated this layer
Set top layer to overlay and performed a highpass filter (radius 2.5) to sharpen the image
added a border & signature.
Thats about it.
No colour saturation boosts/decrease as wanted the image to glow without colour. believe it or not, but the image is black and white except for the sky/earth and almost forgot the earth reflection in the astronauts helmet!
Theres loads of little sublities I added, but the overall idea is above
Enjoy
