Description This image speaks of multiple times.

The age of the door recalls the past. It tells of a time when it welcomed friends and family.

The current condition of it speaks to the present age. It is old and beyond use, but not beyond beauty.

Finally the window and the unfocused image in the background speak of a future. An undefined future, but one of possibility and hope.

Great photo! I am an artist and I was wondering if you would give me permission to use your photo as a reference in a painting. I would give you credit for it. My website is ppendergast.com. Thanks, Patty

I spent a long time looking in your gallery, and I must say you are my favourite in DA so far. I love the sea and I love rust and old worn things with a past, be it good or bad... And you have a lot of it in here (Good art that is)

I love the clarity and detail of the foreground. I'm surprised that a small aperture didn't give you a depth of field that might have brought the distant view into focus.

Or, consistently with your comments, you made a decision that the distance would be soft.

Either way it's a very satisfying picture.

thanks Alec,

DOF is controlled or affected by a variety of things, one is the kind of lens. A wide angle will always have more that a telephoto. I used a normal lens of 50mm for this shot, a wide angle would have given more DOF.

Secondly is the focus point. Any lens regardless of its focal length can only focus on one small plane. As the aperture deceases (in size) the DOF increases in a fixed proportion in front of and behind that fixed point. The proportion is always 1/3 towards the camera and 2/3 away from the camera. Given the distances involved in this scene, an aperture significantly higher that f11 would be required to achieve a DOF over the distances involved and potentially a shift in the focal point too. While I cannot really know for sure, i would suspect we are talking f32 or even f44. While these f tops are available of some lenses, they do have drawbacks in terms of image sharpness. The general rule for the highest grade image is that the f stop should be closed no more than 1-3 stops. For my work, I have tested some of my lenses and found that the higher quality lenses can go as far as 4 stops.

For this image, I REALLY wanted the highest level of detail in the door that the camera could produce. That required making it the plane of focus....and shift would have deteriorated the image because DOF is never as sharp as the POF.

So why the explanation? well with photography it is more often a question of trade offs rather than a "real" choice. In this image, i did not want the background to be sharp...that is the unknown future...but most likely it would not have been possible to achieve anyway, unless I used a wide angle lens, which would have induced its own form of distortion.

So yes there is a choice, but the thing I emphasis most when I teach is that photography is an exercise in trade offs. If you don't want to make the trade off decisions, I suggest people take up painting.

Thanks for such a detailed explanation. I understand a little more about photography now.

I shall apply this new knowledge to my appreciation of photographers' work.

You mustn't apolgise. I'm always pleased when someone takes trouble to explain something to me.

And of course, I loved your picture just as a picture. The fact that you had seen it clearly enough to set the shot up impresses me a lot.
