Description I wanted to create a sense of welcoming, a sense of entering “IN”. Tea is a drink that many friends share, I chose a china cup because it would allow transmission of light. This would create a sense of transparency which is what many of us feel when we are with friends who know and accept us for who we are. It is not often in life that we can remove the masks that we wear and allow our true creation to show.

I chose a scene with strong backlighting to help create that sense of transparency. As any photographer knows, doing so almost always results in compromise and sacrifice within the overall image. Some of this technical stuff was just allowed to fall where it may. Other parts of the image, like the tea cup were managed to ensure they retained detail and the level of transparency that I was looking for.

While I have named this image “Tea Time” it is really more about friendship and the ability to be transparent with those we are close to.

to my muse.

This cup was from my grandmother. She gave me a number of them that she had collected over the years before she died. (She has been gone for many many years)

I don't know if I've seen a photo with so much thought put into it (or at least where anyone else explained ) I love the piece, and I love how everything works so well together. Most, I love the focus. very crisp.

WayneBenedet In reply to awsmdragonqueen [2010-03-09 04:47:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Michelle,

Part of what you see in terms of the sharpness is camera related. The other part is that I think often photographers are happenstance artists.... they come across something and just shoot without any thought. Initially I painted, so thinking about a shot and like in this care actually constructing it is part of the process for me. Art is not just "shooting" a picture. It is about the process, and many photographer I think.... forget the process and go for volume

broke out the studio today. I am teaching a processing class and I wanted material.... so I made some. Maybe I will post it.... shinny metal, royal blue cloth, extreme dynamic range. All the stuff that requires processing skill.

Thanks,

The DOF could have been a bit better, it is fine towards the camera but I would have liked the handle to be clearer. But I had light and other limitaitons so I did what I could do.

Lovely shot and a lovely sentiment.

A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.

Your photographic works are admiring. You've captured still life quite well. The colors and composition are subtle that I sometimes think they are paintings instead of photographs!

the light at this time of year is quite spectacular because the sun in so low on the horizon. Given that the weather has been exceptionally warm this year, I have spent more time that usual outside.
