Description
I had an idea the other day- I wanted to try drawing some characters I like but from memory, to see how well I visualize them. As I worked I realized that only some of it was from memory, and a lot ended up being from imagination filling in the details. Why do this? Well, I want to improve my visualization abilities- to see what I draw before I draw it. I decide to leave it as inks to save a bit of time, as this is mainly a practice exercise rather than something I want to draw as a big project.
At any rate, for some characters I got closer than others. Certain design flairs stick in my mind better than others, and when it comes to school uniforms I get very close to just guessing.
So if you look at a character in this pic that you recognize and they seem a bit off from their usual look, now you know why.

Nice thing to know when improving in artwork.Β This means I'm not utilizing my memory enough.Β Always thought it best to just solidify something when creating your own characters, and then draw using those as a ref.
If your memory can holster that many details about a character, it's probably better to be able to do it that way too.

Checking references is vital, so I think you're doing well with that part. My problem is visualizing before I draw. If I can't visualize properly, no amount of good references can help me achieve what I set out for. I need to hold a clear image in my mind of something, then use the references to make sure I'm not missing parts or reversing things or building errors in. At least, that's my thoughts on it.

Yeah, that sounds about right.Β There's also this thing I call mind-to-paper-degridation that you have to look out for.Β As you visualize something, the image tends to deteriorate or alter as you start to draw it, making it even harder to jot it down, because by the time you get around to it, the image in your head has changed because of the influence of what you drew.Β Once you solidify it in your head and can completely remember it, you can possibly keep draw at it until it looks about right.

Pretty good! The girl from Slayers is Lina Inverse, and beside Ranko is Jougasaki Mika, but other than that you did really well (especially considering that I was off in a lot of the details of the designs).

These are quite nice for b&w anime/manga style character illustrations β in my hey day of acquiring lots of anime merchandise, I indulged a lot in art books and these look like they're taken right out of a professional's collection. The only character that I'm really familiar with and recognize is Linna Inverse (despite the fact that I've only seen a teeny-tiny fraction of the Slayers universe). Regardless, nicely done! =^-^=

Thanks! I felt like this would be a useful exercise when I started, and I figure I learned a bit during it. Hopefully it will help with my visualization when I'm drawing other original works, especially comics.

Pretty good! Only there's no Suzuka (I'm not sure which Suzuka you meant), but I'm glad you could recognize some.

I thought the girl on the bottom left was Suzuka from Tokyo Ravens. -->Β Β img.sharetv.com/shows/characteβ¦

Oh, I can see the resemblance. It's Ranko Kanzaki from Idolmaster Cinderella Girls.

Some are close to the originals, others that look a bit different loom better imo. ^^

I've still got a long way to go, but I try to practice every day and look at how the pros do things. That's helped.
