I find the tutorial interesting and helpful.
Regarding to the photoshop comments, I'm pretty sure they say that
simply because they can't do it. Or they're not that skilled yet if you prefer.

Jeez, what is up with the people in the comments section in Youtube?! I find this really helpful!
If they think this way of painting digitally is not helpful, they should have never commented in the first place.

Yes this is really aimed at beginners who are looking to learn the techniques of how to go about painting a subject. From here they can move on to create artwork which is a little more diverse and artistic.

Thanks for commenting and taking the time to check it out!

totaly wrong. Beginners shouldn't learn drawing with grids and painting (coloring) with color pickup tool.

They shoul learn anatomy by books (bridman, loomis, bammes,..), class videos like Vilppu have and A LOT of life drawing.
They sholuld learn coloring by books (color theory), videos and A lot of observing from nature, capturing and putting on canvans/photoshop.

i used to learn like you show in video. Totaly wrong. Ask any good artist for that

I do agree with you, observation of the world around you is key to becoming a good artist. Its also a life time of dedication to your art that will make you stand out. But I think that before a true beginner of Photoshop specifically can start creating art they need to know the basics of the program. They have many questions such as: What resolution do I need my canvas? How do I chose a colour? How do I make my brush bigger or smaller and how do you blend with it? How do you add the small details? Etc..

These are the basic fundamental questions which beginners need answered before they can start using the traditional methods within Photoshop. It's like being told to paint a portrait oil painting before you have been told how to hold the paint brush or how to prime the canvas. They need to know the tools they are using, once they know these they can move on to create something which is art. With this tutorial they are creating an image and by using repetition of the various Photoshop tools will learn them inside out. It's not ment to be a tutorial that they can watch and instantly become an artist, it is to show them the basics of Photoshop.

I personally use the books from Loomis, I think they are amazing. But to include that level of instruction in a YouTube video which describes in-depth the way to draw an anatomically correct portrait from scratch with colour theory and the fundamentals of lighting and the way that lighting changes depending on what surface its interacting with, would take a very long time to produce and be expensive to produce.

Perhaps over time I can create tutorials which look at these subjects indepth which will help them more as artists, but for now I hope that I have helped a few people figure out the tools of Photoshop in a simple manor.

what your saying makes sense to me, the reason grids are a good for beginning artists is because it allows them to begin visualizing people and objects in correct proportion which is of course one of the most vital and important details of capturing the likeness of what an artist is trying to portray. Daniel Craig would not look like Daniel Craig if his eyes are too far apart or his nose was too small.

I personally appreciate this tutorial. thank you for submitting it

PS: you use grids once you have good basic knowledge. Those grids are used mostly for master paintings studies where you are considered on painting, not drawing
