Description

I know this idea has been done to death but I wanted a Bulbasaur of my own! It actually started when I went to the flower shop to look for things for my garden… but then I saw this little succulent and I knew it would be a perfect ‘bulb.’ In actuality, it’s a Haworthia cymbiformis, closely related to Aloe Vera and native to arid climates of South Africa. Haworthia and other succulents like to grow large root systems (not necessarily deep, just big), and one of the main things that bothers me with these awesome and adorable planters is that whatever plant you put in them is going to run out of room rather quickly! Succulents also don’t do well when the roots are sitting in moisture (roots have to breathe too!) and they need well-drained soil, which doesn’t happen without drainage holes. Plus bulbasaur has a rather large bulb so if I wanted a plant that was even remotely the correct size I knew it wouldn’t be very happy in there at all. I want my Haworthia to be able to live a long life there, so I hollowed out the bottom and placed it in a proper pot. Now the roots can go wherever they please and I will have a perfectly sized plant for my Bulbasaur for hopefully many years to come. It’s a bit annoying in the pictures, but a sacrifice I had to make!

Spring is here and I felt the need to do a photoshoot in his natural environment! I hope that enhances the photos instead of being too distracting. I was surprised b how different the daylight is than the lightbox I use to take pictures! I had no idea the color would change so much, but I guarantee it’s the same thing. I just wanted to show a few pictures before I planted it.

This was the first sculpture I made with the Sculpey Medium blend. It works well enough, but I think I will still keep the firm and original for doing detail work. It was useful to have firm on hand to make Bulbasaur’s eyes and have it keep the sharp edge without squiching. I usually don’t like to make them this shiny, but I had to coat it with a heavy duty oil-based finish so he could withstand being exposed to sunlight and water. Hopefully he will last a long time!

Materials: Sculpey Medium blend (and firm for the eyes), aluminium foil, primer, acrylic paint, and sealant.

Dimensions: Bulbasaur is 3 inches long and 2 inches tall (not including the plant!)

Thank you! And I can't believe you haven't seen this before - it's all over 3D printing shops and the like. Although I guess you have to go looking for Pokemon stuff otherwise you wouldn't have a reason to come across it I guess!

Thank you! I am glad you like him - there aren't too many Bulbasaur fans out there and I think he's really underappreciated!
