Description
One of the things about living in a so-called "swing state" is that suddenly you get presidential candidates showing up all the time...this was a rally at University of Nevada, Reno this past Saturday, less than a mile from my house. For the first time in my life, I have chosen to vote in an election. It's not that in previous elections I was a lazy voter or anything. It's that I was taking a deliberate stand of voting abstinence. I was exercising my choice of not voting. It would take awhile to explain, but to put it simply I had not wanted to endorse what our presidential elections had become and I was essentially "saving my vote."
This is not what I was saving my vote for. I had a plan, I had a philosophical concept of what I was going to do with my never-cast vote. I had a statement I was going to make.
So much for plans.
I have to use my vote this time around. I find myself living in a nation where, inexplicably, a large group of people are still beating their chests in displays of their "conservative" values, where social intolerance is used to beat back the evidence of their own lack of introspection. Where fear mongering and and saber rattling supercede logic and diplomacy. Where the corporate good is more valuable than the preservation of our planet. Where knowledge is not pursued, but rather world views are assumed for the sake of not having to face up to the discomfort that maybe the universe does not work the way you would like it to.
And I find myself in a nation where John McCain, one of the handful of politicians I thought had a shred of decency, has placed himself behind the wheel of the same slimy, corrupted right-wing propaganda machine that has consumed this country over the past eight years.
No. I cannot sit this one out. I will not tolerate anymore a nation where chants of "drill baby drill" and songs of "bomb, bomb Iran" pass as political wit. I will be sure that whatever the outcome of this election, I will be able to say that I placed myself on the side of history I actually believed in.
So yes, I am going to vote for Barack Obama.

Great photo, particularly bearing in mind that it must've been so busy. I think the line of heads at the bottom of the image actually emphasises the feeling of being in a crowd, even if it isn't what one might generally consider 'erfect photography'.
As someone else said, this is what photojournalism is all about.
Your image description is very powerful, too. In the last election over here I voted tactically in opposition to the local Conservative candidate (who got in anyway, and who I grudgingly have to admit is a decent representative for this area).
I can understand your reasons for making a silent protest, particularly under a system that only offers you a couple of choices. At least I have minority candidates to choose next time round. They won't get in, but I'd like to be heard.

I just wish after winning he stays firm by his words. And well somehow there is finally peace. I understand the war on terror I understand the sovereignty of a country. But what I fail to understand is 5 year old being bombed in their school. I don't understand a whole generation the whole youth being ruined cause their previous generation did something wrong. There must be another way...

Excellent photo, perhaps the best of him that I've seen. I also voted early for him, for much the same reason you did.

Arthur,
You are one lucky bugger to have been able to see him in person. I would have liked to but here in Maine we're on the fringe of everything. Let's hope he gets into office!

This is a very great, dramatic capture. After Mike Gravel, Obama is definitely my choice
Your write-up sums is funβand evidently reflective of a lot of voters this time around.
I would sharpen this a little though just to make Obama's face less blurry and make him stand out a little more against the crowd. In photoshop, I would do something like Filter>Unsharp Mask>Amount 60%+Radius 0.6+Threshold 0 β¦ for this size photo at least

I use Focalblade actually, much better than unsharp mask. But I sharpen for print size. The downsized files for the web I usually don't bother resharpening...
Cheers

All i can say, is wonderful shot. Love the black and white and the depth is great.
As for everything else, I cannot agree with your statements. I won't start a political debate on here, so I will keep my mouth shut on why I do not agree.

I've had many discussions with friends who were also practicing "voting abstinence". They all want to make the same statement, that there is a problem with our system. But in our system a silent voter is exactly that: silent. I don't believe silent protest has ever yielded results.
This is not the time, but at some point abstaining voters should create an organization and tell the country why they don't vote. Otherwise they are just viewed as individuals who are politically inactive.
I'm glad that you have decided to not be silent in this election.

Good for you for deciding to vote.
I can't say the same for me. I can't decide between Bad and Bad. It look like I will continue to sit this one out.
