Description
Eleni was standing behind a bar, wiping some damp glasses dry. It was 11.56 pm. Her shift was due to end in four minutes. The front entrance of the bar was swung open, and Eleni looked up with her best I'm-tired-but-I-have-to-be-nice-to-the-customer smile. A man walked in. Eleni recognised him as Sam, the magician from the city. He was obviously a fake, but he always charmed the ladies and had an interesting story or two to tell her about his day.
But today he looked horrible. Eleni's smile faded as he walked toward the bar.
"Whiskey on the rocks," he muttered. His words were a little slurred, but he already had money on the bar, and Eleni couldn't refuse such an upset-looking man. She put ice in a small glass and filled it with whiskey.
"What happened?" she gently asked as she slid his drink across the bar to him.
He only gulped the drink down in one hit. She slid the bottle next to him.
She leaned closer to him.
"Sam? Tell me, what happened today?"
"I--it's all... over..." he said between hiccups.
Eleni only shook her head.
"How much did you drink before coming here tonight, Sam?"
"Not much," he slurred. "Only enough to calm me down."
Eleni looked at her watch again. 12.00.
"Sam, my shift is over. I'm going home now."
Sam stayed unresponsive at the bar.
Eleni grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled that Sam already paid for his drink, left it behind the bar and grabbed her bag. She began walking toward the door.
She heard the scrape of a barstool against the ground, and footsteps behind her. She stopped in front of the door, expecting it to be Sam walking behind her.
Suddenly the door burst open, and a pale man clothed entirely in black walked in, complete with a long, black, swishing coat. He brushed past Eleni, his female companion bumping her aside as she walked by.
Eleni took an involuntary step back, and looked at Sam.
Sam just stood there. He faced the man and woman with such a smouldering look of rage that even Eleni was scared of him, if only for a second.
