Mateo’s a brat. That’s pretty much it. He was raised in a wealthy household and knows nothing else.

He seems to have a hard time taking anything seriously – or rather handle it seriously. He enjoys side comments and simply twisting a conversation around in a completely unrelated direction. He is constantly making smart-alek remarks and annoying somebody with what he considers “irresistible charm”(he is rather full of himself) – but this is mostly a façade. The betrayal of his uncle cut him deeply, and his worst fear is if anyone were to see him without his mask.

He's very clever and observant, but has a tendency to not focus on the task at hand. He is sometimes misinterpreted as rude or outspoken, which he can be both, but it's never on a malicious level. Although he is rather care-free, he is extremely competitive, and is aggressive when provoked.

▫ Biography: Until he was 3, Mateo lived in Teotihuacan, Mexico by his given name, Quauhtli with his native Aztec mother. His father, a Spanish nobleman that sailed to the new world with Columbus, died while Mateo was an infant.

Mateo’s uncle back in Spain, Emiliano, was without an heir, after all of his children had died at a young age due to illness. Desperate for something that might move him up in society and feed his ambition, Emiliano (a wealthy horse breeder) sent for his nephew in Mexico. Mateo was torn away from his home and brought to Barcelona, where he grew up as any other nobleman’s child – privileged and educated. His uncle made sure that both Mateo and the surrounding society thought that his nephew was actually his son, and kept his “uncivilized” bloodline buried deep. Mateo, luckily, grew up fairly light-skinned with blue eyes, with hardly any trace of his native ancestry (he always looked slightly tanned, which was quickly attributed to his time spent outdoors with the horses). Starting at a very young age, he was given a tutor, and was schooled by the finest that could be afforded, but he never really grew close to his adopted father; Emiliano remained distant and somewhat cold.

And so Mateo was left to his devices and a stuffy old tutor. This fostered an inner rebellion, which caused quite a bit of trouble when he grew to an adolescent, and although he was given anything he could ever want, he took to thievery and other pranks.

Soon after he turned 18, Mateo happened to overhear a conversation between his ‘father’ and a stranger and learned that he in fact was not his son, but a nephew. He confronted his uncle in a heated argument, after which, Emiliano – fearing Mateo would ruin the secret and tear down the family’s place in society – hastily sent him with his tutor to Rome to “learn philosophy and art, and anything else required of a well-rounded nobleman.”

In Rome, Mateo was extremely bitter and treated more like a prisoner than a student which further prompted him to continue with his ruffian mischief. During one of his routine hoodlum activities in the city, he happened upon a hungry dog viciously defending herself against some harassing guards with nothing better to do. Feeling a slight twinge of a conscience, he whisked in and managed to not only rescue the mutt, but grab it some food and humiliate the guards as well. After a particularly narrow escape over some rooftops, he came to learn the dog had a knack for finding a way to follow him whether it be over rooftops, walls, etc. Knowing he couldn’t just leave the animal, he brought it home with him where he wrapped canvas around her legs to protect them when she chose to climb up buildings with him.

Over the course of the year, Mateo learned that his biological father’s name carried some weight in the local taverns, and he came to learn that he had been an assassin. With a little further investigation, he found that for whatever reason, his uncle had his finger in some Templar business, and feeling it was his duty to learn more about his father, he enlisted with the secret organization of killers; hopefully to keep an eye on his uncle and see that he hurt no one else.
