.♦• VIDEO TUTORIAL VERSION ON YOUTUBE ---> www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqfIYT…Hey everybody! Just wanted to share a quick tutorial on how I color skin. I've always wanted to make a tutorial, so I hope this helps somebody.
The skin is done all on one layer, using a custom brush that blends with the colors around it. Therefore, the colors I use often appear less strong and more blended. Keep that in mind when you look at the color drops I placed beside each step.
Explanation of Steps:
♥ Step 1: Base ---> I fill in the whole skin area with a very desaturated pink-red color. At this stage, the skin might look kind of 'dead', but that's where the next step comes in.
♥ Step 2: 'Blush' ---> I just called this step 'blush' for lack of a better word. Basically I pick out a more saturated pink-red color (as in, more pink-red looking) and use that color on the nose, cheeks, ears, lips, and any other area I feel needs some 'life' put into it. This step makes the character look less like a corpse and more like someone with blood under their skin.
♥ Step 3: Shadow ---> This step depends on your lighting scheme. In this example, I'm coloring it in the most basic lighting scheme, which is where the light is coming from above. Therefore, when I place the shadows, it is in areas where something is above it, like under the nose, where the neck connects to the head, inside the ear, under the eyebrows, under the hairline, etc. For the shadows I use a dark, saturated blueish color. I avoid using a warm tone for the shadows most of the time, as it makes the skin look very monochrome.
♥ Step 4: Highlights ---> The last step I take is to color in small, bright hightlights on certain areas of the face. I use a very bright (but not quite white!) purple color for this. This is usually left for areas I want to stand out a little more, or where the light would be hitting the sharpest, like on the nose, on the top of the eyelids, and on the side of the face.
Then I finish up the rest of the coloring, and she's done!
