Description

EDIT #4:  Please send a link if you use this tutorial.  I'd love to see what you've done!!

This took a really long to make, and it gave me many problems.

All the doodles, except for the creepy PowerPoint tail, were drawn yesterday, and the whole project was put together in PowerPoint.  The subject for all of the examples is Deinonychus.  If there are any problems or concerns, just say so below.

I hope y'all like the tutorial and that it was helpful.  Thank you and, have a great holiday!

EDIT:  Yes, there are several typos in there, but I am not going to fix them now.

EDIT #2:  The typos are fixed, and thanks to MattMart, a couple of helpful tips were changed/added.    Thank you!

EDIT #3:  We fixed more typos.  Thanks Mommy for editing the tutorial!

What if no people had ever give the raptors the mammalian ears before, while some knows it's inaccurate, while some may think it's badass??

Yep, since falcons, eagles and owls are not related to each other, we can call dromaeosaurs raptors (animals with pennaceous feathers that kill prey mostly with their talons)

Brilliant!

I hope I could use for drawing realistic dromaeosaur species in cartoon style. (And especially in real-life also!)

Oh, and one thing you didn't mention but which people get wrong all the time, concerning eyes. As in birds, they didn't have eye balls, but rather eye discs. Because of this, the eye could not move very much in the socket like it can in mammals (people are always drawing dinosaurs looking forward or behind with the pupil near the corner of the eye-impossible!). As in birds, raptors would need to tilt the entire head to look around.

I thought that was just for Owls!  Whoa, and thanks a lot for these information filled comments!  I had no clue about this stuff!  Again thanks.

I will need to change this soon, again.

Excellent tutorial! The only one I'd take issue with is number 2 - scales and beaks are unknown on paravian snouts. Scales are unlikely for two reasons: one, basal forms seem to have fully feathered snouts, making it necessary for raptors to re-evolve scales which, why? Toughened skin works just as well for protection and probably formed the precursor to beak tissue. As for beaks, they would be useless in an animal with teeth in the pre maxilla, see dinogoss.blogspot.com/2011/04/…

Vitor-Silva In reply to MattMart [2013-12-27 16:03:32 +0000 UTC]

Matt, the beak question applies to ornithischians too, right? I would depict a pachycephalosaur or a heterodontosaur with only the  lower jaw beaked, is it correct?

MattMart In reply to Vitor-Silva [2013-12-28 12:46:32 +0000 UTC]

Probably, though these cases of "half beaks" are problematic to interpret... see a slightly outdated discussion here dinogoss.blogspot.com/2011/01/…

Vitor-Silva In reply to MattMart [2013-12-28 23:28:00 +0000 UTC]

Interesting, despite being a more plausible possibility (or at least an "as plausible possibility"), it is so obscure in scientific illustrations. So far, I've only saw you (your Stegoceras have a fleshy upper jaw, isn't it?) and portraying ornitischians in this way.
