Description
This is a scene I had in my head that made it to my sketchbook and I wanted to see if it would work as a painting. It's the familiar imagery of the fishermen out to see just trying to get food, they stay out just a little too long, the weather turns bad and sharks move in. Now they're too far from the boat and are surrounded. Of course in this world it's a field with farmers and a farmhouse too far away. This is acrylic on panel. I'm not very good with acrylic but I'm making myself learn them now so I'm not so one-dimensional as an artist. I had a lot of fun with this I hope you like it.Related content

This looks great, and it's such an interesting idea as well. It's hard to imagine you struggled with acrylics seeing this! Everything looks wonderful.

There's an old saying "Only van Gogh could work with yellow".
Apparently, now there's a second artist who can do so.
Great work, and funny idea as well.

what a great shot, it reminds me of a N.C. Wyeth picture or something but with SHARKS!!! crazy, man. but i must say for someone who doesn't do acrylics much you have great brushwork. what's your normal medium of choice?

Thanks, NC Wyeth is a favorite of mine. However, I normally play around with watercolors and pencil. I did enjoy trying this, so I'm gonna have to try it again soon.

I love the effects you've got from the paint. What are acrylics like to work with? I generally use watercolours but I've been considering using something a bit different.

I really fight with acrylics honestly. Most of what I've done in the past is watercolors and you learn a rythm and sequence with that medium that doesn't translate to acrylic. The only reason I'm trying to learn them is the forgivness factor. Sometimes I change my mind on something halfway. I'm going to find some slow drying acrylics cause it's really hard to blend anything before it dries. You should give them a try for sure.

I'm still having a really hard time with acrylics. I'm happy to hear you feel like there is a good level of detail present. Thanks

yeah, I'm not familiar with that. I'll check it out. I'm always unintentionally copying something I've never seen. Thanks for commenting.

Good question. I took an acrylic class when I was 14 and then left it alone. I can't remember doing anything with it until a few months ago when I used it as part of the Moon Cannon and then again on a cowboy picture. The size is around 8x15 I would guess. I already filed it away so I would need to check.

Cool, same sort of situation for me. Used them in a color class a few years back then didn't touch them until 4 months ago. Quite fun and forgiving aren't they?

yes, very forgiving. They don't blend as well as oils for me, but I don't have to wait 3 months for them to dry either.
