Right, so the screenshot [link] on which the initial mockup was based on was an April Fools' joke.

But it was an interesting interface and since the original post I had a lot of various ideas brewing, and now finally have a bit of time to work 'em out.

This is what I have so far, and it's got a little bit of everything: it uses the proper Windows 7 "window ui" (unlike the original mockup); borrows some elements from Chrome (tabs); some stuff from Firefox (panorama, awesome bar); some from addons (close tab undo button); uses metro-like style for buttons; and even has some"experimental" stuff like browser-based site login, which is based on ideas of Aza Raskin.

(strangely enough nothing has been borrowed from IE so far, hmmm )

This is just for starters though. I've got a whole host of ideas I'm gonna be fleshing out in Photoshop and will post on my blog [link]

Oh, and needless to say, this is no longer really an IE9 concept, more like a "my ideal browser" concept. Who knows, maybe somebody will decide to turn this into an actual Firefox addon/theme.

The only problem I see with this is the "IE Style" navigation buttons - the tiered look doesn't fit with the metro style.

Pretty cool though.

Honestly it's pretty messy, which would be the opposite of what the Metro UI tries to achieve. The fake screenshots are too minimal, but this is too cluttered. Of course, if this was any good non-Chrome browser, I'd be able to hide most of it...

But do away with the Win7 glass and the gradient, and the excess buttons.

Well, if this was "real" it would be completely customizable and you'd be able to hide pretty much everything except the tabs. As a concept though I wanted to show all available functionality. Case in point the "add ons" button - why FF has one for "downloads", but not for "add ons" is beyond me. Anyway, I'll take a cluttered browser that I can clean up over a minimalistic browser I can do nothing about any day of the week

True (usually, unless you get buggy software that makes it next to impossible to completely customize the UI; this has been the case now for the FF4 nightly builds).

It has a resemblance to Microsoft's Zune Media Player, so it's possible.
