Description
I just came to the realization that I forgot to put this piece I painted in May up here. This was my final project for my Italian Renaissance Art class, which basically just had to be anything to do with the Italian Renaissance. I based this off of this annunciation scene by Fra Angelico [link] although instead of illustrating conception of Christ, mine explains the conception of rock and roll. It just made sense to me to give the part of the Mary, the Queen of Heaven, to Elvis Presley, The King of Rock and Roll. This is him on the front porch of his parent's house, unaware of what he will do to the history of music until Gabriel, here played by Little Richard, one of Elvis's main inspirations who conveniently considers himself the messenger of the Lord, appears to give him the low-down. Of course the Holy Spirit is a Gibson Flying V guitar and Adam and Eve getting expelled from paradise are John and Yoko getting escorted by the police from their own special garden. Then there is some other symbolism in here too, like the blackbird after the Beatles song for the Civil Rights movement and the transition from Soul and Gospel to modern Rock and Roll, but this description is already long enough as it is.
