Since the Mayor of Haversham County had brought in his unique and controversial punishment system crime had tailed off to such an extent that not only was he voted in once more, this time unopposed, but he had extended the reaches of his power that even the most minor of misdemeanors would now result in harnessed discipline.

For example, take Alice McKenna who rushed through the park under the watchful glare of her current passenger who needed to get to the pharmacy before it shut its doors, the nature of his much needed medication remaining undisclosed though rumors persisted about a scrofulous nature.

Alice briefly exchanged a mournful gaze with her husband travelling in the opposite direction, for he too had been subject to the ponification punishment for the crime of putting up flyers for a garage sale on the wall outside the local middle school. But under these new laws his seemingly innocuous task was now constituted as vandalism and defacing a public building, his sentence was the same as any other petty criminal in this county and had spent day after day in his rubber prison hauling the lawmakers around town.
