I can’t believe this, I needed everything to go perfectly so I could impress the right people and finally work my way up the corporate ladder. This was my first conference representing the firm so I called ahead to ask about the menu’s as I have a mild mustard allergy, but they had no reservation for a Mr Jefferson from my firm, only a Ms Jefferson! I tried to explain but they wouldn’t change it, all they could do was cancel it and re-book but the hotel was full and there was a waiting list so I would be shunted to the bottom of the list. I couldn’t believe it was all falling apart before it had even started. My boss was already on my case, but this was going to kill my career stone dead. I explained it to my wife and she suggested the last thing I wanted to hear, but what could I do but attend as Ms Jefferson. I borrowed some of her clothes, bought a good wig and had her teach me the basic fundamentals of make-up as this was a week long conference and would have to dress up more than once. Oh man, this was going to be a game changer.

And so here I am. I checked in and even though my heart was pounding I saw some familiar faces who, to my relief, didn’t recognise me. During the conference I would just sit at the back, take notes, steal ideas and draw no attention to myself, pretty solid plan considering. But as I kept my head down I was suddenly hit by a spotlight and was asked up on stage, I stood on wobbling legs and walked in front of everyone wondering what the hell was going on as I heard a polite applause echo around the large room full to capacity of my peers.

I glanced at the podium and frowned seeing a speech written in a familiar handwriting.

“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to talk about..er…”, I glanced round to the projected background and read it out loud, “…..being transgender in a male workplace and how becoming a woman is my true goal in life and business….huh….?”

I turned back to the crowd who were now applauding more firmly to show their support for my apparent bravery, that’s when I noticed there in the front row was my boss ….and my wife ….holding hands. Oh.
