Description
In honor of my 450 followers, and since several of you have expressed interest, I did a very long-winded tutorial on how I make my Dexter's Lab fanart!I do this using GIMP and Inkscape, though I'm sure this will work for Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. You can use a mouse or a tablet for this tutorial!
THIS TUTORIAL ASSUMES YOU KNOW HOW TO USE A PATHS/PEN/BEZIER tool, which is what we'll be using to make the lineart - I didn't feel like going into the basics in this particular tutorial.
However, if you don't know how to use the pen tool or are otherwise confused by some of the Inkscape tools (there are so many!), never fear! Just check out these awesome tutorials:

I worked really hard on this so if you like, please fav/comment!

Gosh I had no idea that your vector work was in Inkscape! This is so cool to read. Whenever I tell people Inkscape is good for vector work they sorta.... shrug and turn back to Illustrator :'D
That blurring step is something that was definitely missing from my own work, will try it out the next time I do vector stuff again

Yep, I've been working almost exclusively in Inkscape since 2012. You probably don't need Inkscape if you already have Illustrstor but hey...Inkscape is free!

Oh, cool! I've mostly been using Inkscape too but had to use a lot of Illustrator in school eventually, that's where most of my "oh noo... inkscape is hard to use!" comments from co-students and teachers came from haha :'D Β
I still prefer inkcscape for its' lightness though and that is such a boon when using older computers, hehe

Really helpful. Even if i set my inkscape file size to 3000 or 4000 on gimp, the lineart will still look smooth.

Yes, inkscape is amazing, I almost never use anything else these days. Be sure to blur it slightly before scaling down in GIMP or it might get grainy.

Thanks for the tutorial! Could you possibly help me? I can't seam to adjust the stroke with of the pen tool. The options all seam to be grayscaled out and I'm very confused.

I think you need to have the specific stroke selected to adjust the width.

Hmm, still not working. Thankyou regardless! Do you possibly have any other ideas?

When I get back to my PC I can check.

Thankyou! I haven't been able to fine any other program that works well for my lineart and it's been putting down the quality of my work.

Yes I love Inkscape, it's all I use for lineart now.
Ok, all I can see is that you must not be selecting the line you want to adjust. Β The line turns red when it is selected. Β I uploaded a graphic, on the left the line is not selected so the Fill/Stroke menu is grayed out, but clicking on the line lets you work with the width options:Β sta.sh/0nr12e7s9fo

Huh, still no luck :-/ Maybe inkscape is glitching? It's highlighted rad, but still nothing.

That's true, it can be glitchy sometimes. That's all I can guess though, sorry!

Try rebooting first! There are also forums where you can ask about the program.

Nope, I just can't imagine going back to Gimp for paths - it was so fussy!

If you want colored lines, would you do it in inkscape or gimp? And how?
π: 0 β©: 1
Wickfield In reply to NicaRox2006 [2013-12-31 03:28:13 +0000 UTC]
With Dexter's Lab fanart, I usually color the lines in Inkscape by just changing the "stroke" color of the specific line. Β (So I would take the line I used to draw Dexter's hair, for instance, and change the "stroke" color to orange). Β In most of my other drawings though I just color in GIMP by locking the lineart layer and coloring directly on it, I cover that in my GIMP tutorial.

NicaRox2006 In reply to Wickfield [2013-12-31 03:50:52 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, but that's only if you do the lineart in GIMP right? Like, can you get the lineart .png file from inkscape and color it in GIMP?
π: 0 β©: 1
Wickfield In reply to NicaRox2006 [2013-12-31 03:55:33 +0000 UTC]
No, you import the lineart .svg into GIMP like in step 6 of the tut, and at that point it rasterizes it and you can color it in GIMP by locking the layer just as if you had started in GIMP. Β You can't take it back to Inkscape after that though because the format has changed (it's gone from vector to raster form). Β Does that kind of make sense?

NicaRox2006 In reply to Wickfield [2013-12-31 03:58:47 +0000 UTC]
Yes yes, completely
Although, I don't have GIMP so maybe it could work for Photoshop?

How do I set it back to lineart settings? I used the fill and stroke setting and now anytime I use the paint bucket to fill in a section of the body in my artwork, all I get is purple lines inside my node lines regardlessΒ of what color is chosen at the bottom of the screen. I hope that makes sense. I am not sure how to explain it any better.
Β
Also, I used to have two boxes on the side of my screen in inkscape, one with the color maker in it, but I exited out of them and don know how to get them back. If anyone could let me knowΒ the answer to both my questions, I would appreciate it so much.
Β
P.S. I am obviously new toΒ inkscape hahah...also, great tutorial I will be referring back to this frequently!!Β

Not sure about your second question, but as far as the first goes, I can tell you that the color fill option in Inkscape is really finnicky which is why I don't really use it. Β I'd ignore the fill tool and focus on your lineart until you get to GIMP, whre you can fill to your heart's content.

This is so cool! Your Dexter's Laboratory art is so cool, I thought I had stumbled onto the creator of the show since the art was so accurate. Great job, I really enjoyed this.

Wow, what an awesome comment! I try to be as accurate to the original series (seasons 1-2) as possible and so to hear that is great.
I hope the tutorial helps, too!
