Azar is a rhinoceros. Believe me, this one was hard since Azar has so few good qualities. Rhinos represent protection, self-assurance and tenacity. Much like Azar, Rhino people tend to be confident, solitary, and often times difficult to read, leading to a stereotype of unpredictability. Azar is largely alone among the platoon, not really well liken by anyone. He is somewhat unpredictable, but this could potentially be a simple misunderstanding of Azar's character. He does, after all, show a different side of himself upon discovering Kiowa's body. Azar has his one moment of redemption when he says, "But I sort of felt guilt almost, like if I'd kept my mouth shut none of it would've ever happened. Like it was my fault" (O'Brien 176). Now, Rhino people are generally withdrawn and introspective, and they present a front of power, invulnerability, and ferocity when provoked. Azar seems to have impenetrable lack of morality, constantly mocking the dead, dying and grieving. The Rhino totem helps people to draw within themselves, becoming less sensitive to external influences and more in tune to their own wisdom and intuition. Perhaps this is what the war has done to Azar.
