Amarea’s sword hung poised in the air, ready to be thrust downward and end the life of the beast that lay at her feet. Just as she was about to take the dragon’s life, she heard hoof beats behind her and paused. She glanced behind her to see Lovie approaching. Odd, given that the mare had just moments before refused to step toward the downed dragon. The woman watched the mare come closer, and was confused when the horse made to veer around her. She instead moved toward the dragon, who was now also watching curiously. When she came within striking distance, Lovie halted, and extended her nose toward the beast. After a moment’s hesitation, the dragon returned the gesture. The two touched noses and exchanged breath, and Lovie closed her eyes. After a moment, the horse lifted her head once more and stepped off so she was away from Amarea and the dragon.
The woman watched her mount, puzzled by her actions. But when she turned back to the dragon, the female looked content. The fear had gone from her eyes, and she shifted her gaze from the horse to the human. Was it just Amarea, or did the dragon look ready for the death she expected to receive? Odd. It puzzled the woman as to why the horse, who had been so eager to hunt and had been injured in doing so, would wish to gently touch noses. And why did the dragon now suddenly look at peace?
Her confusion cut through her rage, and as she looked at the dragon, she came to realize that she didn’t truly have the heart to kill it. She lowered her sword and sighed. “Well, I suppose if I can’t kill you, I might as well try taming you. You’ll need some medical attention anyway.” She glanced at Lovie, and could have sworn the mare was nodding in approval at her. And the dragoness, well, she didn’t look any different really. Still content for whatever fate awaited her.
Amarea knelt down next to the dragon and placed her hand on its head. Her scales were surprisingly smooth and warm, and they shone in the light of the setting sun. Amarea felt Lovie’s breath on her neck as the mare walked over to them and nuzzled Amarea.
They sat like that until the dragon was rested enough to walk, and then Amarea place a rope around her neck, and the three traveled back to the beach. It was nightfall before they were picked up, and it was a few more days before they left to return home, since both the dragon had sustained significant injuries. But, travel home they did, and surprised everyone on the ranch when the trio arrived. Where on earth were they supposed to keep a dragon?
