Description It was no surprise that Kamaria was the first to notice her sister's strange behavior. Shasa was usually a very happy filly, carefree and generous. Lately, though, she'd been withdrawn. She spent more time alone than usual and declined invitations from her siblings to play. She dreaded going to school and looked both sad and angry when she returned.
Kamaria had her suspicions as to what was going on. Shasa had reached the age of boys and pettiness. Kids could be mean, and the eldest sibling suspected that Shasa's problems were becoming internal. Worried, Kai began to pay closer attention to the middle sister.
One day Kai noticed that the bathroom door was cracked open. Pausing by the door, the orange filly listened carefully at the door. She could hear frustrated muttering and sniffles. It sounded like a distressed Shasa, so Kamaria pushed open the door. The sight that greeted her confirmed all her suspicions. Shasa was working hard to "improve" her appearance. Her hooves were painted a gaudy shade of pink, her normally mousy grey mane and tail had been dyed black, and she appeared to be in the process of curling her mane.
Shasa froze when she saw her sister's reflection in the mirror. Slowly she turned, eyes red and moist, mouth set in a determined frown. "What do you want?" she demanded, though her voice shook a little.
Kamaria stepped inside and shut the door with her hoof, looking sadly at her sister. "What are you doing" she replied, ignoring the original question.
"What does it look like? I'm trying to make myself less ugly," responded Shasa. She was now glaring defensively at her older sister.
Kamaria shook her head. "Who told you you were ugly?"
"No one had to. My ears are too long, my mane and coat are the same color, my hooves are cracked, I'm fat-" started Shasa angrily.
"Stop," interrupted Kamaria. "You have never noticed any of these imaginary flaws before, and if you did you didn't care. So I'll ask you again: who told you you were ugly?"
There was silence for a few moments as the sisters regarded each other, two stubborn will powers waiting each other out. Eventually, Kamaria's calmness won, and Shasa sighed. "Karma and Destiny. And Rogue. They kept teasing me, and I thought maybe doing this would get them to stop."
And get Rogue to notice her, Kamaria thought. He was a boy in Shasa's class, Kai knew. By modern standards, he was physically attractive. To the discerning eye, however, one could see that the boy was shallow and callous, careless with his words and uncaring of whom he hurt. Shasa could do better. "Shas, there is nothing wrong with you. And what your doing won't help. In the short term, maybe, but definitely not in the long run."
"What would you know? You're beautiful. You never had my problems," Shasa spat angrily. She was having trouble holding back the tears now.
Kamaria paused and looked into her sister's eyes. "Big nose. Skull face. Shaggy. Mud foot. Chubby. Moony," she listed, never breaking eye contact.
Shasa's battle with her tears halted, and the younger filly cocked her head. "What are those?"
"All the things my class mates called me. Still do, in fact. 'Big as the moon, and just as stupid' they used to say. I didn't escape the cruelty of children any more than you have. Neither will Fell, or Kalea when she's older. I was bothered by the things they called me too. I straightened my mane, painted my hooves black, tried anything I thought would work to get them to leave me alone. And they did, for a time, but then they just came up with new things to call me. It never ended."
"But how come you don't do those things anymore?"
"I realized one day that it was pointless. I shouldn't be trying to impress them, because they were determined to tease me. Simply, I decided not to care. And after a while, they stopped teasing me. I stopped letting them win, and they got bored and moved one. Changing only lets them win, because they know they've gotten to you and because you destroy a little more of yourself every time you try to conform," said Kamaria gently.
"But how?" asked Shasa desperately. "How do I stop it from getting to me? How do I stop hurting?"
"It's a choice, like anything else. If you choose to stop letting them win, that's what you'll do. Also, you can come talk to me whenever you need to. It's dangerous to keep all these feelings bottled up. It's another weapon that Karma and Destiny use against you."
Shasa stood for a long time, taking this in. Then she looked at her big sister. "Can you help me wash this off?"
Kamaria smiled. "Of course. You can tell me about everything while we work."

So, I was tired of studying for finals (which are next week, btw) and decided to draw. I was listening to a lot of rock music while I was brainstorming, which wasn't helpful, so as I was jumping around my music I came across this song www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HgjPb… and knew that this idea was a winner. It's been a while since I did Kamaria and family, anyways.
Let's not talk about the anatomy, lighting, and lack of shading. I'd rather not dwell on it, especially since some of the anatomical flaws were on purpose.

Anyway, so here's Kai being an awesome big sister. This was a few years before her father fell ill, so the family is still reasonably happy and secure. We haven't hit the depressing stage of her life yet.
