Jimmy Cross has a Lion spirit. Self-control and strength. Fairness, courage, patience. All words that describe Lion people and Jimmy Cross. Lion people, like Jimmy, tend to be charismatic, prideful, protective, and peaceful unless challenged. Jimmy is not a violent person, and he feels very responsible for what happened to Ted Lavender, showing how protective he is of his soldiers. Lions are very tactical, well aware of their strengths and weaknesses, able to judge a situation and act to their best advantage through wit and skill. Jimmy knows full well that he thinks too much about Martha, a girl who doesn't love him. He carries her letters with him after all; "They were not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping" (O'Brien 1). He knows that he should have moved to higher ground rather than camp in the village latrine. Though Jimmy isn't the best leader, his Lion spirit is teaching him to be a better one, as well as the importance of balancing work with family time and relaxation.
