Rat Kiley has a Vulture spirit. Vultures teach people to trust in the universe to provide for them, that is they follow their own path they will be taken care of. Those are some things that Rat would have done well to learn before he completely lost it. Perhaps he could have put his trust in the universe instead of "[taking] off his boots and socks, [laying] out his medical kit, [doping] himself up, and [putting] a round through his foot" (O'Brien 223). Vulture people tend to be resourceful and fully developed in the skills they possess. Contrary to popular belief, vultures follow mess, not the other way around. Just like Rat, Vultures are good at cleaning up problem situations, not matter if they are emotional, spiritual, or physical. Vultures typically have an efficient, effective solution to everything. Rat Kiley, being the medic of the group, is constantly cleaning up the messes made by others. He may not exactly be able to clean up all of his own messes of emotion, but he certainly does seem to have a handle on other people's problems, as evidenced by his care of O'Brien's first gunshot wound.
