Description Tim O'Brien's spirit animal is the falcon. Like the falcon, he sees the world as it truly is, not just what it appears to be. The whole book was written because, "I want you to know why story-truth is truer sometimes than happening-truth" (O'Brien 179). He is always aware. Falcon's are good at finding the hidden meanings in different situations, like how O'Brien sees the story-truth within the happening-truth. They tend to take things to the extreme, just like O'Brien does with the man he killed, making up a story for the man who used to live in that body. Falcon's tend to be symbolic messengers, able to fly between the physical and spirit worlds. Tim O'Brien seem to be trapped somewhere in between these two worlds, and perhaps his falcon spirit is trying to lead him back to one side or the other.
