People cheered. They screamed, and waved their hands and signs conveying their favorites. Some looked through binoculars, just to see how tragic it really was. As soon as the big bay colt passed the post, the crowd went wild. They roared and clapped and screamed and jumped out of their seats in excitement. Then, horror crossed their faces as they watched the fall of the second-place winner.

The dark grey filly collapsed just as she was beginning to slow. Vets on the track rushed to her, and I watched in as much agony as her eyes portrayed. Her frail ankles had given out on her. The cameras moved alongside the track to get good footage of the race track disaster of the 134th Kentucky Derby.

Her pain-filled neighs called out to everyone. Her cannon and sesamoid bones were shattered in both of her forelegs. Vets took action and injected her. Time stood still- but her pain didn't until her body went limp.

It was then; I saw a group of protestors rush out onto the track, screaming at the crowd and waving their arms, attempting to get their attention. They each held signs that read, "PETA says: Boycott racing!" and other phrases such as, "Change the laws of racing and reduce cruelty and pain!" The crowd noticed them, and weren't sure how to react. The adults in the owner's stands hid their faces in shame for supporting and participating in such a cruel sport.

Eight Belles lived no more.
