Description
As compensation for the fact I didn't post like... anything in the last... month, I decided to draw the Canadian-famous Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow, which we commonly call the Avro Arrow (I maybe getting into my Arrow-phase rn)What the Avro Arrow was was a supersonic jet interceptors that could intercept Soviet jets that could carry nuclear weapons to Europe and North America (more precisely, the member states of NATO), the interceptor jet concept had been around since the beginning of the Cold War, mainly by Western nations to prevent a nuclear attack from the Soviets by bombers, and Canada was of course not an exception, so the company Avro Canada, which built a previous jet fighter, the Avro CF-100 Canuck (which by the way was the first jet for the Royal Canadian Air Force), commissioned the CF-105, and was accepted in 1953, and construction wouldn't begin until 1957
The first Avro Arrow, RL-201, took flight on March 25th 1958, with Polish-born Chief Development Test Pilot Janusz Żurakowski at the controls, although it was planned for October 5th 1957, but the Soviets launched the sattelite Sputnik on that same day, the test was pretty successful, but some minor problems did arise in regards to the landing gear and flight control systems
Five Arrows were built between 1957 - 1959 (this art depicting the fourth one... RL-204), however, the Canadian government, headed by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, halted production on the Arrow, as well as its Iroquois engines, which effectively ended the Arrow production, but Canada tried to sell its Arrow's to the United States and the United Kingdom, but no arrangements were finalized, and the cancellation of the Avro Arrow cost 25,000 people their jobs
The Avro Arrow has this pop culture status in Canada, as it was a highly developed and powerful jet interceptor that would've been great for Canada, and some even claiming that Canada could've become a superpower with the Avro Arrow, but this was after all just an interceptor, not a nuclear bomb, it would've been powerful for Canada, but not enough for superpower status (although the idea of Canada being a superpower in the world sounds cool)
Most of this information does come from Wikipedia , but the part of the cancellation costing 25,000 people their jobs comes from The Canadian Encyclopedia (which probably should've been where I could've gotten more of my information, but I'm tired af right now)
(Also, here's a variant where the Red Ensign is replaced with the modern flag )
