Description After looking at 's gallery yesterday, I remembered I too had drawn something similar, so I dived into the stacks of old sketchbooks...

Finally, I found five older drawings (circa 2008), grafted them together into a single picture for some quick colouring practice and voilà: You get several cartoony Romanian soldiers in action supported by a T4 tank (PZ IV H) and an IAR 80 fighter.

The uniforms are those worn on the Eastern Front and the time frame is autumn 1943.

This is fantastic! I'm glad the focus is not on the usual Germans, Russians, etc.

Thanks! Of course, since I am Romanian myself and an active reenactor, the choice of subject matter was somewhat obvious, especially, since, as you well note, the Romanian army is poorly represented in most media related to the war despite it being the 3rd largest Axis army (second largest after the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front) and then the 4th largest Allied one after the 23rd of August 1944...

Yeah, I think the Romanians, Italians and Hungarians took very heavy losses on the Eastern front since they were guarding the flanks of the advancing Germans.

Not always.

The farthest point of advance into the Soviet Union by the Axis was actually reached by the Romanian 7th Mountain Battalion "Ioan Buteanu" of the 2nd Mountain Division with the conquest of Nalchik, in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, in a pitched battle raging from the 25th to the 28th of October 1942.

Unfortunately, about the same time, the Soviet "Operation Uranus" managed to break through the Romanian, Hungarian and Italian lines north of Stalingrad so a general retreat on the southern front was ordered on December 4 1942.

The whole success of Operation Uranus relied upon the fact that the elements of the Romanian Third Army that were guarding the northern flank were poorly trained, under equipped and overstretched, sacrificing defence in depth in order to plug the gap, and, by way of contrast, the 21st and 65th Soviet Armies and the 5th Tank Army were among the best trained troops available to the Russians and also outfitted with top of the line equipment.
Even so, despite lacking armour support and anti-tank weaponry they did repulse two attacks, only succumbing to the third after their ammunition supplies ran out and they found themselves caught in between the Russian tanks which had bypassed the lines (there was very little that could have been done to stop them, considering the lack of anti-tank capability) and the Soviet infantry relentlessly launching itself in massed wave attacks. To quote one veteran "they could have come at us without weapons and we couldn't have stopped them, there were just too many".

In the end it all boils down to the fact Hitler ordered the city of Stalingrad conquered at all costs, which tied up a significant number of German and Romanian troops, which in turn left an insufficient force to guard the flanks and gave the Soviets sufficient time to train and equip an offensive force of themselves, all while using a vast number of their own soldiers as mere cannon fodder inside Stalingrad proper, since, after all, they had an advantage of manpower and could afford the losses.
