Description
A long, long time ago, in a land far, far away, drew a picture of some rather stereotypical WW2 soldiers and set up a challenge - whoever manages to colour this picture according to some very stringent specifications shall get Twenty American Dollars! So yeah, I thought I could really use 20 bucks.

i'd like to argue that the soviets should be in the "good" seeing as they did like 80% of the work in defeating nazi germany, and sacrificed alot to win, america just always seems to try to claim credit for it all

This couldn't be more true for Call of Duty: World at War, displaying the heroism of the US marines, the brutality of the Wehrmacht, and the barbarism of the Red Army.

Except that all sides had people who were heroic and all sides have their own share of brutality and barbarism. War is not, by any stretch of imagination a black-and white affair. You have just look at the first world war to see the blurred lines.
In the end I think it all comes down to the politicians back home who decide the level of brutality and barbarism their troops must impose. It's easy - just dehumanize and vilify the opponent, and war crimes flow naturally.
"The Jews and the Slavs are subhuman" - Bam, Holocaust.
"The Capitalists are all pigs" - Bam, 50 years of brutal communist dictatorships imposed on Eastern Europe.
"the Americans are all godless imperialist dogs" -Bam, Jihad.
"the Arabs are all good for nothing terrorists" - Bam, Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay.
See the pattern? As long as you apply blanket stereotypes on a nations or races or ethnicities you get that.
In fact the whole point of this is me addressing computer game stereotyping - it's why I eventually gave up cookie cutter Fps games like the afore-mentioned COD franchise and instead prefer to play either multilayer only like Red Orchestra or more realistic games like ARMA II. You get an actual feel of conflict (and as Army reserve I know exactly how that feels like) instead of a railroad trip through checkpointed missions gunning down legions of faceless mooks.

War itself may not be a black and white affair, but the causes for it are in a lot of cases.
The First World War was not only unnecessary, it was the great act of European suicide.
With the Second World War however, depending on who fighting, the choice is pretty black and white as to who we'd support. It's clearly obvious that we should support the United States and United Kingdom against the Nazi Genocide state and Japan's savage military.
(Yes, they unfortunately bombed civilians during the war, but would it have made them wrong to be at war with Germany and Japan? One can more-or-less support the allies without supporting Dresden or Nagasaki.)
However, the same thing can't be said for the Soviet Union when it was being ruled by the genocidal monster Stalin, who killed many before Hitler even got into power.

the allied powers didn't find it ok, more that it was not worth the human life lost if they would of called Stalin out on it.

Frankly, I think you're either completely oblivious or a rather inept but overly nationalistic little troll.
You seem to conveniently forget the 36 million people directly killed by Nazi Germany (without getting into the casualties caused by the war on all countries involved, including Germany itself which amounts to about 70 million -the former 36 are included and from those 23 are Soviet, military and civilian alike). By the way, the "60 million" figure you provide, while bearing a passing resemblance to some of the more conservative estimates of total deaths of WW2, is certainly far from the number of people killed by Stalin - that figure is reckoned to be somewhere around 20 million for the whole period, including pre- and post-war purges. Not that it somehow makes Stalin a more lovable guy.
You also somehow seem to be labouring under the impression that unless Hungarians died, it wasn't "bad" which is why you "conveniently" mention as "bad" specifically the neighbouring countries who got territorial gains after Trianon. I'm amazed the Slovaks aren't on the list as well.
So yeah, Nazy Germany was bad. Not only "sort of bad", all out bad. The problem is that so was the Soviet Union.
And a lot of other countries, including your beloved Hungary, or my native Romania were, if not on the same level, at least pretty bad in their own right.
We both took part in the Holocaust. Romanians massacred people in Odessa. Did we kill some Hungarians as well? Of course we did; in 1944. Did you kill Romanians? Of course you did; in 1941. That doesn't make it "right" or make us "even" or any of those things. All of it was bad and that's the end of it, and you're a bloody idiot if you think any of those are somehow justified.
And oh, speaking of the "forgotten tragedy" that was the 1956 revolution, I bet nobody remembers the 1941 Traznea massacre, for example. Or the 1941 Ip massacre. Or the 1941 Kamikazes-Podilskyi massacre. Or the 1942 Novi Sad raid. The last one killed more people than the 1956 revolution, and guess who's responsible for all of those? Also, while you're at it, please try to guess what nationalities were the victims? I'll make it easy- the perpetrator was the Hungarian Army and the victims were Romanians, Serbs, Jews, Russians, Ruthenes, Gypsies...
You see, there is no place in the real world for black and white morality, so next time you feel like getting on a nationalistic high horse and claiming "your people" to be the sole victims of history, you'd better check that your house is spotless and you have no skeletons in your closet.
If there is one thing I really, really can't stand is people playing the victims for something bad that happened more than 50 years ago. No matter how much some of your ancestors suffered, you, yourself, haven't, so don't you DARE play the sympathy card again with me, especially if you want to use it to perpetuate some fresh national hate of your own.
And before you even THINK of making this about Transylvania and how "we" stole from "you" or other such nonsense, any piece of land should belong to the people who inhabit it, not to some fatcat politicians in Bucharest or Budapest.
I was born there. Were you? If not, then you have no say in this issue, as do the people who live outside of it, no matter their nationality. Also, I think the residents of the predominantly Magyar KovΓ‘szna and Hargita should choose their own fate as well. Do they want to stay as part of Romania? Fine. Do they want to be part of Hungary? No problem.

oo ooΒ i remember that to, speaking on the 1941 Traznea massacre, and most of the other ones you named off.
personally ive all ways found Stalin the more evil (if that word can really be used for any one) he sent his own people off in to the meat grinder and laughed about it. Now by no means am i saying what Hitler and the SS did is in any way is small compared to what did Stalin, no no only that by the end of their respected lives that Stalin had a much much larger body count on his hands.
Then again you seemed to know your stuff so i think al go do some more research then get back to you on on my own opinion of the matter . truly it dose not matter witch one committed the grater crimes only that people know the truth of what they did.
In the end i agree with much of what you have said well i have much to read and only so much time so till i have leaned more good bye and continue spreading knowledge to the best of your ability.

I'm just noticing an auto-correct error- the name of the town in Ukraine where Hungarian and Ukrainian Jews were killed on August 27 and 28 1941 is, of course, Kamianets-Podilskyi. Unfortunately, auto-correct knows nothing of Ukrainian cities, but has heard of the Japanese Divine Wind, hence the switch.
And while the Hungarian Authorities themselves didn't actually press the trigger, they sure as hell handed over those people to the Germans knowing full well what was going to happen to them, which is just as bad.
The total number of dead in this incident is about 23,000, out of which 14,000 were Hungarian Jews, purposefully deported by the authorities in Budapest.
As you can see, this overshadows a bit the 2,500 casualties of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, your yardstick for evil committed against civilians...
