I admit I always pictured the friendly arms as slightly less Keep like (if fully walled), but very cool nonetheless. I guess I will find use for that image in our campaign.

Well I have that feeling too but in fact when you look at the walls, dungeon, turrets (in the game) everything is designed for war. I don't remember if there's a book about the History of that place in BG but I bet before it was like an outpost for BG city. Now wars are over you don't need it as a keep and so it's the Inn we all know.

IIRC Bentley built it from the grounds up, and had to wall it because the whole Sword Coast is full of monsters (who tried to prey on his guests).
