Hey, nice first attempt! The star-field turned out great! Perhaps adding some more light to the planet would give it a more 3-dimensional appearance? It looks very flat! I've noticed some people have already linked some excellent tutorials, but here is my favourite: [link]
It's what got me started in space art. its a pretty incredible tutorial. It might be a little confusing at first, but just roll with it. And, if you having any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them! I might not be the best space artist ever (FARRRR farr farrrrrr from it.) But I've learned a few things over the last year I've been doing this stuff!

The planet just needs a little spherise to it as the others said. Other than that I like it!

Nice job for your first try!
If you want to learn more about making planets you should try out some tutorials.
I used that one [link] , which is awesome. It is also for GIMP, very convenient imho. I was very pleased with the outcome of my first planet by using that tutorial.
Hope that helped a little

Looks pretty good your starry background is pretty random (which is good) it makes it look like a real star field.
Some Improvements I would make would be If you use photoshop You use photoshop(Or I think Paint.Net can do it also)
Select the planet with the wand tool, and make sure its selected completely then go : Stylize>Distort>Spherize>100%*1.5 (once at 100% once at 50%)
This will make the planet more round and spherical.
Another thing I would do is put some stars in the top left corner around the edge of where the planet would be so it doesn't just look like a corner gradient.
But other than that you did a good job after 1 or two planets you should have it down (it took me a few to get it right also too
it happens to everyone)
