I don't usually scan directly into GIMP; I just use the scanning wizard my scanner comes with. Then I open the scanned image into GIMP.

You should have one already installed with your printer. If you use a PC, just go to Start -> Devices and Printers -> Double click on your printer with the scanner -> Then click 'Scan' and follow the directions

Birdie121 [2011-07-10 17:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Almost every time I see a copic or marker drawing, the artist comments "The scanner killed the colors." Now they need not complain anymore! Congrats on the DD!

jensen-nicole [2011-07-10 16:54:53 +0000 UTC]

That's really cool!
A note, though, for CS5 users: in step 4, instead of using the cloning brush, you can usually use the "heal" tool, set to "Content-Aware"... but be careful, because sometimes content-aware makes it worse.

Thanks a lot for sharing, that's truly interesting. My scanner tends to shift towards blue too much now. It's annoying when scanning pencil drawings as I have been using (intuitively though) filters that prove far too intrusive. What's your advice?

RuiRafael [2011-07-10 13:54:56 +0000 UTC]

I can't stand JPG overall, there's always a loss in image quality.

I ought search more about dpi though, I still have a hard time knowing what does it actually mean (besides some sort of resolution & dots per inch).

Great tutorial though!

Whenever I scan in my artwork, it automatically saves as a jpeg and
my scanner is a Cannon MP620; is there a way for me to save it to .tiff from the get-go? D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolf-Suit In reply to Pae-kym [2011-03-28 06:10:26 +0000 UTC]

Using the default Canon software that came with your printer there should be an option during the preview scan phase to select file type and resolution. You can scan directly into Photoshop, which will definitely give you full control over all the image settings.
I wish I could be more specific, but I never installed the scanning software that came with my Canon printer - I use Image Capture instead.

As far as I know, most marker brands function the same on paper. Whatever brand you use, the principles of the tutorial are the same- so I hope you find it useful one day!
